Words, the internet is full of them and if you knew the meaning of everyone you'd be sat in Dictionary Corner on Countdown not reading this. So, if you're looking for a simple app to look up words in a dictionary & thesaurus and offer translations, then Dictionary & Translation Pro could be what you're looking for, or could it? Find out how we got on with Dictionary & Translation Pro on our Nokia N97...
If you are ever lost for words, or more importantly if you ever like cheating at pub quizzes, Dictionary & Translation Pro could be just the thing. This clue-is-in-the-title app accepts words via the keypad and cross-references them in a dictionary and a thesaurus as well as offering translations into multiple languages.
One slightly odd thing, which wasn't strictly the app's fault, was that we couldn't initially find the app once we had installed it. It turned out that the Ovi Store installer had put the icon in our Games folder rather than with the rest of the apps. Odd, and a bit annoying.
Anyway, once we had actually found Diction & Translator Pro, it worked pretty well. There is no actual data installed with the app - you need to have a working internet connection so that it can check an online database - but searches are fairly fast. The data apparently comes from a collaborative online database, although we couldn't find any way of contributing. Dictionary content is fairly basic, with just definitions and pronunciation. The thesaurus seems pretty comprehensive and the translator positively hurls data at you - each word is translated into portugese, arabic, spanish, french, hindi and more.
The interface is a bit of a let down, however. Touchscreen controls aren't implemented so on our Nokia N97 we were forced to use the hardware keyboard to navigate the interface - how this would work on a phone with no such keys we can't fathom. The app is also adware - you get a small but noticeable banner ad on the main screen. It's not too intrusive, but it is there.
We were also a little dispappointed with having to load the app every time we wanted to check a word. A home screen widget would be a smart addition to any future version, if only to avoid the loading time.
Ultimately, this is a fairly useful little app, albeit one that you could probably recreate with a couple of web bookmarks. A little more polish is needed before we will be giving it a permanent home, though.
