If you're looking for a quick pick up and play offering for your Nok, then Crazy Penguin Party could be the game you're looking for. It's a party game filled with lots of mini challenges to keep you occupied on the move. But is it worth you p-p-picking up a penguin for? Read on to find out in our Crazy Penguin Party review…
From loading the game up (on our Nokia N97) it's clear this isn't a game that takes itself seriously (as if the name Crazy Penguin Party wasn't enough of a clue). It features bright cartoony visuals, that a set the tone for the look and feel of what's to come.
It offers two game modes: 'Quick Game' and 'Tournament Game', the latter has you participating in six different games against a CPU opponent with varying difficulties and level variations in an effort to mix things up a little.
'Quick Game' lets you instantly get into any of the titles mini-games. The first game we tried - 'Free Fall' had us attempting to skydive into a paddling pool before our opponent. Players must tap the sides of the screen to move from left to right to navigate through rings for extra speed. Initially we found it unresponsive on our Nokia N97 but once we got the hang of it.
Other games such as 'Rocket Science' has you control a jet pack equipped penguin hop across blocks of ice before your opponent, or attempting to get to a goal or having to flee from a giant octopus.
Thankfully there's some variety, but occasionally you'll find the controls let the games down, especially at times when being as quick as possible is the difference winning and losing. You'll find yourself tapping away at the screen only for nothing to be happening.
'Tournament Game' mode adds a little more depth. Here you must face-off against another CPU opponent in order to beat them in a series of challenges. When choosing a challenge its colour is revealed. The first to collect 4 different colours wins. It's a neat addition, but you'll find yourself playing the same games as in the 'Quick Game' mode. The novelty soon wears thin. At the time of review we were able to pick up Crazy Penguin Party for free thanks to an Ovi Store offer offering a number of games from developer, Digital Chocolate for nothing.
Overall Crazy Penguin Party is a decent pick up and play title that offers some mild amusement, but unfortunately it gets boring pretty quickly. Awkward, often unresponsive controls don't help either. It's a well presented title with fun graphics but if you're looking for something to entertain you on long journeys, you're better of looking elsewhere.
