Mobile phones have been getting better in every area with each generation, but it’s perhaps the cameras that have come on the most, with Nokia leading the field. According to Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s Executive Vice President, they’re about to get even better, with the ability to render digital SLRs obsolete. Nokia have been among the best phone manufacturers when it comes to camera phones, with excellent Carl Zeiss optics and features including Xenon flashes helping to provide better than average image quality. In fact, with recent devices such as the Nokia N97 Mini, it’s even possible to leave your compact camera at home, but apparently this isn’t good enough for Nokia.
Instead, Nokia also has the digital SLR market firmly in its sights. In an interview reported by Reuters, Anssi Vanjoki pointed out that Nokia phones will have the ability to revolutionise the camera market in the near future, with HD quality video coming to Nokia handsets within the next 12 months.

Pointing towards a photographer during the interview, Vanjoki said: “There will be no need to carry around those heavy lenses”. He went on to say: “It will not take long, less than a year, when phones can record HD quality video and you can transfer it directly to your HD television set”.
Whether consumers will opt for a smartphone over a digital SLR remains to be seen – after all, SLR’s are also bought for their usability, functionality and range of manual control options, but there’s no doubt that an SLR-quality camera phone is an attractive option.
