Ovi Suite is a fantastic application for syncing information to your Nokia handset, but it’s also capable of a lot more than simply backing up your phonebook. One of the most useful features of Ovi Suite is the ability to download and install complete countries for Ovi Maps on your Nokia, so you won’t have to use your data allowance when navigating. Read on to find out how to use Ovi Maps Loader…
Once you’ve opened Ovi Suite, you’ll be met with four main sections – Contacts, Photos, Messaging and Music. Maps aren't usually available from the home screen, so click on any of these four to get to a more detailed menu. Once you’ve done this, click on Maps.
Make sure your Nokia handset is connected to your PC, and turned on. This allows the maps to be transferred to your Nokia once they’ve downloaded. Clicking Maps brings up a host of different options, and lets you choose from different parts of the world, currently split into America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia/Oceania. If you don’t want to download from a specific area, you’ll also be able to click All.
At present, you can’t download all the maps in one go, so will have to download the ones you need at any one time. Click on the country you’re interested in – you’ll see the size of the mapping to the right of it, and be able to click Download from the far right of the application.
Once you’ve hit Download, you’ll see a progress bar at the bottom of the application, which also includes the time taken to transfer the map to your Nokia handset. Unless you have lots of time to download all the maps, it makes sense to stick to countries in Western Europe, or those you know you’ll be visiting.
The major advantage of using the Ovi Maps loader is that once all the maps are stored locally, your handset won’t need to download details on the go, which is great for those of you with limited data plans. It’s also a lot better once abroad, as you’ll be able to avoid potentially very costly bills, and you’ll get a much better service in areas where there’s a poor signal.
