Ovi Store: Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge Review

ninjani-1Ever find that your ninja-like reflexes are wasted? We get that feeling too. Keen to brush up on ours, we headed straight to Nokia's Ovi Store to download free shuriken-flinging game for the Nokia N97, Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge. It's a gem. Read on to find out why...

Perusing the Ovi Store in search of the best free games to get our hands on we came across Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge. It's the latest action game from developer, Breakdesign following the addictive That Roach Game South Africa, which we've already given the thumbs up to. Is Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge just as good?

Like That Roach Game South Africa, Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge doesn't cost a penny. And like said bug-squashing game, Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge makes you believe it's a steal right from the minute you boot it up and watch its action filled story introduction.

Here's how it goes. "Many centuries ago. In the land of the Ninja. Ninja assassins killed the emperor, an his bride pinches Kumi kidnapped! Only the most deadly ninja can bring her back alive!" You do so by using your phone's touchscreen - we used a Nokia N97 - to aim razor sharp shurikens at the oncoming deadly ninja assassins across several oriental looking landscapes (think pagodas and temples and you'll get the idea).

It's dead simple. When a ninja appears on screen, tap it as quickly as possible to inflict swift justice. An energy bar on the top left of the screen shows your health. The energy bar on the right shows the enemy health bar, empty it and you've cleared the level. Boss battles at the end of each are a nice touch.

Using our Nokia N97 we found it to be very responsive to our honed reflexes. First aid power-ups pop up occasionally for those not quite as quick. But you may have sore cuticles by the time you reach the end.

Its presentation is great. A lot of effort has clearly gone into making Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge a fun and involving experience. A fully spoken voiceover even narrates events. Although the dialogue in places could be a little more authentic. We doubt many ninjas use the word "sucks". The levels are also accompanied by an ominous soundtrack engineered to get the adrenaline pumping.

Unfortunately, there are no difficulty settings. The bulk of alternate modes consists of a very helpful, well laid out tutorial. Players can also upload their highest scores to leaderboards displaying the top players and top countries. A Shout tool also lets players send short messages to a bulletin board for others to see and respond to.

We had few quibbles with Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge. We'd have liked to have seen a little more enemy variety, and a slightly longer single player experience, but for a free game it sounds great, plays great and looks the part.

So, is Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge worth downloading to your Nok? Definitely. Breakdesign has done it again with another short, but fun, free game that once again sets the standard for complimentary Ovi Store titles. Download it now.
