Nokia N8 Hands-on Preview (Photo Heavy!)

Nokia N8 Hands-on Preview We’ve just been very lucky indeed to get our hands on a preview sample of the Nokia N8. This 3.5-inch smartphone will be running Symbian^3 when it launches later this year. It’ll also pack in a 12-Megapixel camera. Want to know what it looks like in the hand? Sure, you do, so join us after the jump for our Nokia N8 hands-on preview.

We’re currently at an exclusive ‘Show’n’Tell’ in Central London with the Head of Nokia Design, Marko Ahtisaari getting to grips with the inspiration and design behind the latest devices, such as the Nokia N8. We’ll be bringing you a full report on the event soon but in the mean time feast you eyes on the Nokia N8 in all its glory.

The Nokia N8 is made from anodised aluminium so it feels great in the hand. It’s an impressive size with a great balance to it. Being a prototype we weren’t able to check out the Symbian^3 interface, largely because it’s still going through a debug phase so wouldn’t be fair spoiling the surprise for when it launches later this year.

In terms of style and size, the Nokia N8 sits between the Nokia N97 and the Nokia X6, which is what you’d expect from a smartphone with the same 3.5-inch screen size as the Nokia N97. What’s more, it has the DNA of the X6 in terms of fine lines and capacitive screen and no keyboard. However, there is no no denying that the Nokia N8 has a style all its own.

In order to keep costs and design simple, there is no removable battery with the Nokia N8. This means the camera housing for the 12-Megapixel camera doesn’t need to be as compact or small as on other devices. So, what do you think? Check out our photo gallery and let us know what you think about the Nokia N8 in the Comments below.

Hope it has some kind of revolutionary UI, that kicks iPhone’s ass;)

Pulak – Not sure yet. Marko Ahtisaari (Head of Design at Nokia) did point out that their aim was to make the smartphone available to all across the globe, so fingers crossed!

From what I can gather the ends were made of plastic – but if it’s like many other similar phones I’d imagine that’s because of reception issues with an all-metal case, if nothing else. Still, I think the contrastic colours at the top and bottom are a nice touch. Not so fond of the green colour on our prototype though!!

It’s a lot thinner than a Nokia 5800. I’d say a few mm thinner than my N97 Mini.
Not sure about an iPhone – difficult to compare as the sides obviously taper a lot more on the iPhone – I think they’re quite similar TBH, but the Nokia doesn’t get as thin at the edges.

This looks amazing…One thing I want to know : Will it be available in India?

It’s a nice phone, especially the aluminium. Is it so that the end caps are of a different material? It looks quite thick, how does it compare to the noka 5800 or Iphone in sence of thickeness?

  • Phil B

It was a very nice phone – really well made, and nice to see some more options constructed from metal. I did try to quietly turn it on, but no fortune this time!!!

Still, no doubt we’ll get our hands on a proper production ready sample soon – looking forward to it, see how it compares to my Nokia N97 Mini.

Looking good! It’s a shame they didn’t let you check out the UI!
