Nokia has been working on an in-car entertainment system for a little while now, called the Terminal Mode initiative. The last time we checked up on the project it was just Nokia and in-car entertainment specialists Alpine – there’s now a host of other manufacturers involved, including Harman. To find out more about how Nokia’s Terminal Mode in-car infotainment system, join us after the break…
Nokia’s Terminal Mode project is on its way to becoming an industry standard in the in-car entertainment (ICE) market, letting you connect your smartphone to your car’s entertainment system for full interactivity.
The last time we checked, which was during the Geneva Motor Show back in March, the initiative was between Nokia and ICE specialist Alpine. Nokia has now also got Harman – another ICE specialist – involved, with the aim of standardising the interface between phone and car.
Eventually, Nokia’s Terminal Mode will see a large touchscreen display and speakers integrated into your car itself – while plugging in your Nokia or connecting it via Bluetooth will provide the processing power and features required to play back all your music, provide Ovi Maps on the big screen, or let you carry out other tasks such as making hands-free phone calls.
We can’t wait. Whether Terminal Mode will be available for other manufacturers remains to be seen, but the idea – in concept at least – remains a great one.
