Nokia has been working on its Terminal in-car infotainment system for a little while now, and it seems like things are really getting going, with the introduction of some huge partners. With car giants Audi, BMW, Porsche and more now on board, the inclusion of an in-car system tailored around your Nokia seems like a genuine possibility, rather than just an interesting project. To find out more, join us after the break…
Nokia’s Terminal Mode Initiative is a project that aims to see car entertainment systems that can properly integrate with mobile phones – not just letting you wirelessly sync for phone calls, but also displaying everything you see on your Nokia – from photographs to the latest movies – on a big touchscreen display in your car itself.
Nokia had already got in-car entertainment specialists Harman involved with the initiative, along with Alpine, but it’s the recent introduction of BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche and perhaps even VW that really promises to propel Terminal Mode into the mainstream.
It’s not just entertainment that could come from the initiative, either. Audi are looking at the possibility of letting users pay for and download features for their cars – which would lead to cheaper build costs. Instead of building models to different specifications, the company could build all of its cars to the same identical spec, with users then downloading software through their phone to activate the features they want.
It certainly sounds like an interesting idea to us, although we’re more interested in the ability to play back movies, keeping the family quiet while we get on with the task of driving. Either way, we’ll be bringing you full updates on Nokia’s Terminal Mode as the initiative progresses.
