AccuWeather is the self-proclaimed "World's Weather Authority", providing weather forecasst to thousands of businesses and - thanks to their clever branchinginto smartphone apps - many more individuals. The AccuWeather app for Symbian is ad-supported freeware. It comes in two parts - an full client app and a slimline home screen widget. Read on to find out how well it works in our AccuWeather N97 WRT Widget Review...

On launch, the app will try to detect your location. If it can't (or if you choose to not let it) you can just tell it where you are and - providing you have an internet connection - it will let you pick a location from a list.

You can add more than one location in this manner, even if you do have a GPS link, so you can keep an eye on the weather in several places at once.

Annoyingly, the widget and full app seem entirely unconnected - that is, even if you have configured the app with a list of locations you will have to go through the same process again for the widget. Very irritating, particularly if you have a lot of locations that you like to keep tabs on.

We also couldn't get Accuweather to use a wifi connection and it would always default to our 3G link. Not a huge problem, if you think that this will be mainly used outdoors and away from such niceties, but if you want to leave the widget running you may have wanted to give your tariff a break when you are near a hotspot.

These issues aside, we are happy to report that Accuweather is pretty good at the actual weather app side of things. Great presentation, with lots of views - including a seven day forecast with at-a-glance icons for different weather types, an hour-by-hour view of the next 24 hours and a satellite image view.

The advert banner is fairly unobtrusive and shouldn't distract you too much - particularly if you tend to stick with the widget view.

If you want to have the weather at your fingertips - and what Brit doesn't? - this is probably the app to go for. We have some reservations about the networking side of things but providing you  are comfortable with using your data tariff, we say go for it.
