Rocketman has Nokia gamers flying through the air with a pair of rockets strapped to their back while dodging perilous obstacles in this game of fast reflexes, timely tapping and hazardous surroundings. What's more, it's free from the Ovi Store. Read on to find out what we thought of it in our Rocketman review...
Rocketman is currently available for free on the Ovi Store thanks to the inclusion of in-game ads by developer, innerActive. It's a game of reflexes and timing. The aim is to steer a jet-pack -equipped Rocketman through a series of cavernous levels while dodging rocky, icy and other such dangling and floating obstacles.
By default the Rocketman protagonist that players control hovers forwards towards the ground. To make your way through the levels you must make the character hover up by tapping anywhere on the screen. Keep tapping to make the Rocketman go up, do nothing and he'll fall. The idea is to balance tapping with letting go to manoeuvre past the obstacles, or else he'll suffer a nasty bump on the noggin and you'll have to restart the game again.
It's a little vexing to begin with, but once you get the hang of it and clear the first five levels you'll be given a new restart point. It does at times require a genuine sense of good timing as later levels can get tricky to navigate. But there's little variation between the levels, with only the backgrounds and obstacles changing in appearance. It gives the illusion of variety, but once you get into it it's all a little samey after a while. More variation in the obstacles would have been welcome. Occasionally the levels flip from having you start from the right going left instead of vice-versa but levels still feel similar.
Still, It's all very well presented. The graphics look sharp, clean and bright, and a helpful tutorial explains how to play Rocketman. But we weren't so keen on the background music. It's the same music found in the earlier reviewed JumpyBug. It doesn't go well with the game at all - we found ourself muting it instantly, before we fell asleep.
Those who struggle to beat the levels will also find the in-game ads compounding their frustration - they appear every time you die, or restart the game. They're easy to skip, but still annoying nonetheless.
Is Rocketman worth a download? It's fun for a while and does require some genuine skill, but once you've played it for a few minutes you'll find that it's hardly addictive.
