Ovi Store Game: Monsterilla Review

Ovi Store Game: Monsterilla ReviewFrom the mobile game makers that brought us the addictive That Roach Game South Africa and the lethal Ninjani: Emperor's Revenge comes Monsterilla. It's a colourful game with classic group three or more of the same colour style gameplay, with a monstrous twist. We had high hopes for it. Did it live up to them? Read on to find out.

According to the description pasted on the Ovi Store, Monsterilla is about a bunch of monsters (Monsterillas if you will) that are up above some clouds. The aim is to help them into groups of three or more to help them "get to where they're going !"

Of course Monsterilla doesn't really need an excuse or backstory for its action. It's a typical connect three or more of the same colour to score points puzzle game with Breakdesign's own stamp on it. And that usually means slick presentation, leaderboards and community focussed features.

Starting the game up it's immediately clear that a lot of love has gone into making Monsterilla. It's flash colourful menus are a visual treat from the off and  throughout.

Before you dive into the game a neat little tutorial explains all you need to know in mildly humorous fashion, explaining that all you do is drag rows of monsters up and down into groups of two or three to explode them to clear the levels in the allotted time.

Controls are easy to get to grips with. You drag the coloured pink, blue, orange, yellow and green monsters up and down using your fingers on your touchscreen Nok device. To play Monsterilla we used an N97, which responded well to our fingers pulling rows of Monsterillas. Sensitivity isn't an issue but make sure to get a full fingers worth of grip on a row before pulling it. Try to pull a row in a rush by placing your finger in the blank spaces between will mean more unnecessary poking and prodding, which will only eat into your precious time.

Players have just 60 seconds to clear each level. At the best of times it's pretty challenging. The short time in which you have to finish the puzzles adds a real sense of urgency. But the key to success is taking your time (strangely) to observe what's on screen, rather than moving the rows in a  frenzy. It's great fun, addictive even. Players will be challenging themselves to get to the next level.

There aren't any extra modes in Monsterilla. Instead players are encouraged to beat their top score with the aim of posting it on the leaderboards. There are scoreboards for top players and top countries. Another feature lets you 'Shout', or in other words, post a short message to an online bulletin board. Many won't bother, but for those that like to boast, it's a nice community-oriented touch.

Not that the lack of game modes detract from Monsterilla. Overall It's a fun game well worth downloading to you Nok. Its smart presentation, vivid visuals and addictive play make it one of the must-have free Ovi Store puzzlers.

Once again thanks for the awesome review! Something really special coming soon!

It does not have an in-game pause button, and it freezes on exit when connecting to the server to post high scores. This is on a Nokia 5800 with v40 firmware.

Hi Joe. You’re right. There is no in-game pause button. Thanks for pointing that out. We got around that problem by using the keyguard switch on our Nokia N97. It isn’t quite the same but it seems to stop the timer ticking down. Might be worth trying on your Nokia 5800.

Thanks Stephen, the 5800′s keyguard works too, or its red or white buttons. Not having an in-game pause button just seems like an oversight though, especially considering the shorter gameplay of Ninjani but that game had it. On that note, it would have been really nice to automatically save the game on exit, especially if you’re aiming for a top 100 posting, you would have to reach at least 10-11 levels (aka 10-11 minutes). Overall though as you said, much to like in a free game, so can’t complain too much. If Monsterilla had the above features plus perhaps smoother scrolling, it could be a genuine contender against stalwarts like Bejeweled.
