The Nokia 6700 Slide is a compact sliding smartphone. Mixing features and build quality with an affordable price tag, it proves that you really can have it all. From the 5-Megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, to Bluetooth connectivity, there's a lot to like about the Nokia 6700 Slide. Join us after the break for our full review...
In a time when smartphones are getting increasingly large, one of the nicest things about the Nokia 6700 Slide is its compact form factor. It’s much smaller than the latest touchscreen devices, and if you just want a small handset that you can slip easily into your pocket, there’s a lot to like here.
It’s a neat little device, with curved edges that make the Nokia 6700 Slide appear even smaller than it actually is. While our review unit is finished in an attractive (if conservative) sliver, you’ll also be able to opt for purple, green and red.
Build quality is excellent. The sliding mechanism moves with a high quality action, with a reassuring click and a smooth movement. Better yet, it feels like it’s built to last, with no sign of any unwanted sideways movement or the ability to accidently close.

The battery cover on the rear of the Nokia 6700 Slide is constructed from aluminium, and helps to give a premium feel that’s in keeping with siblings such as the Nokia N97 Mini. It was finished in the same silver colour as the rest of our review handset, and the difference in materials is difficult to notice – again highlighting the impressive quality.
Slide open the keypad, and you’ll find a traditional alpha-numeric keyboard in place. The keys are finished in robust black plastic, and prove responsive, tactile and easy to use. They’re also just about large enough to use at speed, although those with larger fingers may prefer a slightly larger pad.
With the keypad closed, the front of the Nokia 6700 Slide is dominated by the 2.2-inch screen. Below that, you’ll find call and end buttons, a navigation D-pad and traditional menu buttons. The screen may be relatively small in comparison to the latest touchscreen smartphones – such as the Nokia N8 – but it’s still sharp, colourful and easy to view.
One of the most impressive features on the Nokia 7600 Slide is the fact it’s easier than ever to set up your email accounts, with an email wizard built into the home screen itself, and one touch access to all of your mail. We also like the menu bar at the bottom of the display, making it easy to access your most used apps, such as the Ovi Store.
Other features include an excellent 5-Megapixel camera, complete with Carl Zeiss optics and autofocus. We’ll be bringing you a full review on the camera in the next few days, but the results are impressive for such an affordable device.
With pricing starting at £189 (inc. VAT), the Nokia 6700 Slide may not appear to be the cheapest smartphone, but that's without a lengthy or expensive contract. You'll also be able to get the Nokia 6700 Slide on a much shorter and cheaper contract than range-topping devices such as the Nokia N8, making it a much more appealling proposition.
Well designed, well made and with enough features to keep most users happy, we like the Nokia 6700 Slide. It would be even nicer if it were a little cheaper, but if you're in the market for a compact smartphone, it's well worth a look.
