Nokia released the Nokia 5228 in Germany yesterday, as a cheaper version of the touchscreen Nokia 5230. Representing something of a bargain, the Nokia 5228 cuts out 3G and GPS to keep costs as low as possible, offering touchscreen functionality to those on a tight budget. The Nokia 5228 has the potential to be the bargain smartphone of the year, cutting out extras such as GPS to help deliver a price point that’s as low as possible. The Nokia 5228 is similar to the Nokia 5230, so you’ll find the same 3.2-inch touchscreen display and Symbian S60 5th Edition smartphone OS, and there are loads of other features also on offer.
In a bid to keep costs down, the camera on the Nokia 5228 is limited to 2-Megapixels, but it should still be fine for uploading your snaps to Facebook. Ovi Store functionality is built into the Nokia 5228, so you’ll easily be able to download and install the latest applications.

There’s a microSD card reader for adding storage, and if you opt to keep your music files on the Nokia 5228 you’ll be able to listen to them using your own headphones, thanks to the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Ideally suited to younger users, the Nokia 5228 is available in a range of colours, including white, black, red, pink, blue, yellow, silver and dark silver. Costing 139 Euros in Germany, the Nokia 5228 undercuts even the 150-Euro Nokia 5230.
With the Nokia 5230 available from £80 in the UK, if the Nokia 5228 can beat that pricing here it’s on course to become the bargain touchscreen smartphone of the year.
