nokia-n8-hands-on-preview-3The Nokia N8 is getting closer to a release date with each passing day – something we’re a lot more excited about since playing with the device. We’ve been thinking about what it’s worth, however, and whether it’s better to buy the Nokia N8 SIM free, Pay as You Go or on contract. Join us after the break to find out…

The Nokia N8 is likely to be one of the leading smartphones of 2010, thanks to its great mix of features, stunning build quality and fantastic camera. All this comes at a cost, however, so it's likely that the Nokia N8 will be more expensive than most Nokia handsets.

Despite having a better specification in many ways than the Apple iPhone 4 - check out our Nokia N8 Vs Apple iPhone 4 piece to find out how - it's likely that the Nokia N8 will undercut its rival, offering excellent value for money. We're hoping that the handset will be available for under £350.

Check out our Nokia N8 hands-on review

Although this may sound like a lot of money for a phone, split that cost over the lifetime of your Nokia N8 and it starts sounding like even better value. For a start, if you buy SIM free you'll be able to use any of the networks, and when combined with a budget Pay as You Go or affordable contract, you could end up with a high-end smartphone for feature phone money.

That said, it will also be possible to buy the Nokia N8 on a contract, which will bring the price down even more.

We're interested to hear just what you think the Nokia N8 is worth. How much will you pay for it SIM free? Do you think it should undercut the Apple iPhone 4, despite having a better specification and more robust anodised aluminium build?

Since the current suggested price of EURO 370 pre-tax/pre-subsidy has set expectations, I would be hard pressed to understand why anyone in the UK would purchase and unlocked PentaBand N8 for more than GBP 307.25 (base price) at current ER. If it’s closer to GBP 350, seems the price arbitrage would force sales across the chunnel. Or am I missing something here?

Even the price of £350 is unbelievably competitive, when compared to the sim-free iPhone 4 prices, the 16gb version costs £499 and the 32gb version is an insane £599. I currently have a 3GS, great device but I’m fed up with Apple’s extortionate pricing and will definitely get a Nokia N8 if it’s going to cost me just £350, that’s like a mid-range HTC price for a top end Nokia, it’s an absolute no-brainer for me. I’ve always had Nokias in the past, the build quality in general was great until I got the N97 which was awfully put together, and that cheap paper thin plastic back put me off and that’s why I got a 3GS as it was really well put together. It’s great to see Nokia using quality materials again, for me that is really important, because the N97 was the equivalent of Vista for Microsoft, just a disaster, I really hope the N8 turns out to be Nokia’s Windows 7. I apologise for the geeky references lol

I reckon Nokia should have got this phone out prior to iPhone 4, they really could have stolen some of Apple’s thunder which is a shame really. Also noticed on play.com they’ve got the N8 for £449 on pre-order, before anybody raises this, I’d just like to add that they tend to have crazy prices, they’ve still got the Nexus One at £599 which is mad

pre-tax/pre-subsidy means before VAT €370 is £308 which you need to add VAT which makes it ~£360 if you were to buy it in europe you would still have to pay VAT which would bring the price inline to the £360 mark, perhaps more because some places in europe the VAT is 22% not 17.5% so there would be no benefit to buy in europe.

but my main concern of the N8 is that it will contain the ‘ATTENTION I AM TAKING A PHOTO’ shutter sound

Hi. I think that the phone should cost what nokia said it is gonna cost. I mean, i hate sellers in general. So if the phone is 370 euro (base price), it cannot cost above 450 euro. Im from Argentina, and here, we pay phones like N97 U$s 700.

I dont know where you got those prices from as The nokia N8 is available to buy sim free (on pre-order) from Play.com at £449.00. so not cheap. makes me want to take another look at the iphone 4g

Buying the phone outright is a very good idea, since phones that are locked to a network have to get a software update that is authorised by that network, and then when they stop selling the phone, you don\\\’t get software updates anymore. Also improves second hand values. Tough, long lasting, software upgrades, new apps as they come – might be very difficult persuading customers to trade up something new after getting a phone like this
