N900 artists expose massive MeeGo potentialIs the Nokia N900 the ultimate pocket computer around? Here at NokNok we've been thinking about the future of Nokia devices and their immense potential. We were figuring out how best to convey our thoughts until we stumbled onto something very special - the Nokia N900 and MyPaint, which takes your smartphone and creative skills to a whole new level. What's more, instead of telling you, we want to show you. It's worth reading on!

We've recently had our attentions drawn to something very special on the maemo.org forums. A thread titled "Look what I drew on my phone" that shows what Nokia N900 users are able to draw using the paint program.

Some of the results are impressive enough, with some colourful, even childlike drawings accompanied by slightly more time consuming efforts using shade effects aided by artist's imaginations using the Sketch program for the N900. But as you can see the potential really starts to shine through once users start showing what they're able to create using the powerful MyPaint program for the Nokia N900.

From the basic Sketch palette to the smorgasbord of brush selections and strokes and effects you're able to create using MyPaint the improvement is immense. And its further boosted by the resistive touchscreen of the Nokia N900.

While certain trends suggest other mobile manufacturers are heading towards capacitive touchscreens,  the pressure sensitive MyPaint shows the potential of resistive screens, with fine-tipped painting really adding extra creativity to mobile paintings and sketches.

Maemo.org forum users Nathriben said: "Never thought it would be possible to draw like that on a little phone screen, but the pressure sensitive brushes turn it into quite the great canvas - and there I thought Art Academy on the DSi already was amazing…"

Maemo.org community member EmmaGX wouldn't know what to do without it:

"…what I particularly love is the number of styles it opens up to me ... before mypaint I was pretty limited to pencil unless I spent ages in Illustrator/photoshop ... but MyPaint seems to be able to produce a whole heap of different results depending on what brushes you feel like using, and I don't think I've properly tried more than 5% ... not to mention the ability to create your own brushes!"

Because its open source, masses of developers are able to create outstanding apps for Nokia devices to be available on a wide range of devices. Developers have already made some wonderful things.

And as you can see with the results of the amazing MyPaint program, the results and potential for new Nokia devices is outstanding. And as you can see it's not just about simple apps. No siree. The computing power of the Nokia N900 means that developers aren't restricted to the kind of cheap, useless apps found on other application stores. They can now create full, powerful programs capable of more than you thought possible on a mobile device.

N900 artists expose massive MeeGo potentialWhile competitors boast of thousand of simple apps, the N900 is able to run powerful programs. Its 600MHz processor and 1GB of application memory and ARM processor lets Nok users run them effortlessly while multitasking, as you can see in the video below showing off the pure processing power of the N900. The potential is immense. And with new, more powerful devices such as the Nokia N8 with its high definition movie-making skills releasing later this year things can only get better.

If aspiring MeeGo developers needed any more incentive to get developing and helping to expand the potential of devices such as the N900 they'd be well advised to dive into the Maemo.org forums and see for themselves the benefits and excitement these new programs can bring to the community. It's mind-blowing stuff capable of setting Nokia apart from the competition in terms of what can be done on a handset.

The Nokia N900 is more than a mobile phone. As the saying rings true it really is like having a computer in your pocket.

Excellent article. The RESISTIVE SCREEN that makes all this possible on the N900 is quite amazing. With a capacitive screen, this artwork would be simply impossible to create. Just because every manufacture and his uncle is producing phones with capacitive screens to match the iPhone, doesn’t make them superior. Look at what we’ll be missing out on here if resistive screens become a thing of the past…
