The Nokia N9 is coming and it will be running MeeGo rather than Symbian. Nokia has confirmed that the Nokia N8, due to launch later this year, will indeed be the first and last Nokia N Series smartphone to use Symbian^3. Read on to find out more about the Nokia N9 being the first MeeGo smartphone...
We brought you news yesterday that the Nokia N8 would be the first and last Nokia N Series device to sport Symbian. At the time this was very much rumour, as it was a casual comment made at a show-n-tell for the Nokia N8 over in Oz.
The thing is, that rumour caught on like wildfire so quickly that Nokia has had to come out and confirm the story to be true.
Doug Dawson Communications director for Nokia told Reuters that “Going forward, N-series devices will be based on MeeGo.” That's good enough for us, as this nicely clears the way for the Nokia N9, which is expected to be a QWERTY version of the Nokia N8 but with less pixel-packing camera power.
This move would give Nokia a three-tier software platform to work with: MeeGo in its N Series high-end smartphones, Symbian^3 (and Symbian^4) for its more mainstream devices, including the Nokia X Series and Nokia E Series. Finally, Series 40 would make up the entry-level phones and budget feature phone set.
Nokia is creating a near development path for users, allowing them to start using devices at the low-end and as their needs and expectations grow so the complexity of the OS can grow with them.
What do you think, is MeeGo being the sole OS on the Nokia N Series the only way to go for Nokia? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments below.
