Nokia 5800 Running Symbian^3The Nokia 5800 has been seen out in the wold running the Symbian^3 operating system, which bodes well for the future of Nokia's first and most successful touchscreen device to date. Seen in the hands of Scott Weiss from the Symbian Foundation it's being used as part of the testing programme. The question is, will the Nokia 5800 be running Symbian^3 when it finally gets the seal of approval? Read on to find out more about the Nokia 5800 and Symbian^3...

Symbian^3 is just around the corner and for anyone owning a current Nokia smartphone, the big question is whether upgrading is an option or even possible? Now, we've no way of knowing at this stage whether it'll be possible, but the Nokia 5800 itself is being used to test drive the new version of the operating system.

How do we know? Well, Scott Weiss, Symbian user interface technology manager, has been using his to check out the changes to the Symbian^3 platform. As you can see from the screengrab above,  the Nokia 5800 is alive and well and running Symbian^3.

The main focus of the video is the new interface for Symbian^3, as well as a few ideas for the future. In the video Weiss talks about the big changes and shift of focus within Symbian^3. Primarily, the fact that it's not He talks about the support for graphics acceleration, pointing out that applications and games are going to load and run 'really fast'.

Single tap enhancements are one of the major changes with Symbian^3. As Weiss points out, this shift is a fundamental one moving the OS away from its non-touch roots, where two clicks to open an app was the preferable method of working.

    This is NOT Symbian^3 running on the handset – its just a theme demo. It was done so they could give an impression of what it might look like / experiment with the UX.

    And I know this because I’m the one doing the interviewing in this video.

    Hate to disappoint, but that\\\’s just the Symbian^3 theme created by the Symbian Foundation. That\\\’s what Scott means by \\\’some things around Symbian^3\\\’. You should know this already.

    @Rafe. As we pointed out in the piece it seemed highly unlikely the Nokia 5800 would be getting Symbian^3 support. Cheers for clearing that up and nice video BTW :)

    I’m happy with my 5800XM but will upgrade to N8. Plan to keep the 5800xm as a backup phone and would like to see both home screen widgets and Dynamic RAM Paging in a last FW update. I know, the last one is a bit of a stretch…and maybe not technically feasible…but it would be nice!

    I guess s^3 will never fit in my 5800 because s^3 seems to be written for a mobile with a dedicated graphics chip as in N8.

    Hi @ prerit, could you explain me in simple steps, how you flashed your 5800 with symbian 3?. I already worked with nokia flashing tools.

    Friends don’t get fooled,the mobile his is holding is Nokia 5800 running in c6 Firmware not S^3 Firmware.
