In developing the Nokia Terminal Mode in-car entertainment system, Nokia has been working with a host of major players in the auto industry. It would appear that Apple has been keeping an eye on Nokia, and has since come up with its own version – Apple iPod Out. Join us after the break to find out how they stack up against each other…
Nokia has been working on its Terminal Mode initiative for a little while now, signing up BMW, Porsche, Audi and Mercedes, among others, along the way. Terminal Mode aims to see mobile phones that can fully integrate with in-car entertainment systems.
After keeping an eye on goings on, it would appear that Apple wants to do something similar with its Apple iPhone, launching the Apple iPod Out concept. Unlike Terminal Mode, Apple has currently only got BMW on board, with no other manufacturers currently in the pipeline.

iPod Out is also a lot more limited than Terminal Mode. The Terminal Mode initiative aims to see a lot more than just music integration – letting you make and answer calls, and more impressively see everything that’s displayed on your Nokia’s screen on the big screen in your car. This means you could have free navigation using Ovi Maps, for instance.
In a bid to lower build costs, manufacturers have also been looking into the possibility of letting users pay to download features through their Nokia handsets – with users paying for and downloading software to activate features – heated seats, for instance, that they want.
At the other end of the scale, Apple’s iPod Out appears to be little more than a coalition that lets you listen to your music in your BMW or MINI. Of course, there’s the possibility that Apple could develop it, but it’ll need more manufacturers to help out if it’s to be a true rival to Terminal Mode.
