The dead are rising from their graves after a deadly zombie-like virus has escaped from a secret government lab. Following a fumbled cover up that went on for far too long, it's up to you to defend your patch from a zombie invasion in this addictive, free Nokia Ovi Store game. Read on for our review of 10PM.
10PM is based around your typical zombie outbreak storyline. Since 1942 the government has been developing new types of viruses to be turned into weapons. Something went wrong and something else got out.
The result? Zombies, that come out to feed every night at 10PM. And they really do. Start up the game before 10PM and you'll be forced to play a game called "Where is the Love?" (with a heart signifying love) where you control what looks like a tadpole (or something else) trying to collect as many pink version of itself as possible.
Thankfully altering the time on your Nok lets you play 10PM, zombies and all anytime you like. Zombies are on the loose and ambling in typical zombie fashion across the landscape. As the zombies scooch from left to right across your Nok's screen the aim is to kill as many as possible before they escape using an explosive-armed crossbow. Each escapee knocks a chunk off energy from your health bar.
Killing zombies is simple. Just tap slightly away from them to time your crossbow shots for maximum precision. It sounds easy but timing your shots to hit the zombies with so many on the screen at once is an addictive challenge perfect for wasting the time away whether you're bored at home or on the train. Shooting them in the head causes the most damage but makes them run faster. Hit them in the stomach and they'll slow down. Another pointer for strugglers is that shooting them in the legs forces zombies to change direction, buying you more time and hopefully more points!
Your crossbow runs out of ammo so you'll also need to keep an eye on your arms with increasing regularity as more and more zombies appear on the screen. There are three difficulty modes: Easy, Normal and Hard for zombie threatening veterans. Other handy extras include being able to submit your best scores for other 10PM players worldwide to peep at, or post short messages to them on an online bulletin board.
Visually 10PM is one of the best looking free Nokia Ovi Store games around. We've come to expect no less from developer Breakdesign, who've brought us such games as That Roach Game South Africa, Ninjani and Monsterilla. Presentation is clean, sharp and fitting with the tone of the gory subject. The sound is awesome too, with harrowing music and ominous zombie groans sure to get anyone in zombie poaching mood.
There is one major niggle though. To play 10PM full screen on our N97 we were instructed to tilt it landscape. The only way we could get it to play full screen was to have the N97's keyboard jutting out. It's a little annoying but we soon got used to it. In some ways it improves grip, but we doubt that's how it was meant to be played. We've yet to try out 10PM on other handsets so we can't say for sure yet. Thankfully it doesn't detract from what is a brilliant free mobile game.
10PM is one of the best free Ovi Store games we've played. With its addictive gameplay and great graphics we suggest you download it right now.
