Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes offers a vast array of crazy golf courses that are perfect for passing time on your Nokia. With different theme parks and, somewhat predictably, 99 different playable holes, there’s a lot on offer here, but does it all come together well as a package? Join us after the break to find out…
The first thing you’ll notice when you fire up Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes, if you enable sounds, is just how infuriating the standard menu music is. Turn it off, at all costs!
We didn’t, and as such were in a hurry to select the first game type that came up on screen the first time we played Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes. At the top of the menu – a simple scrollable affair – is Quick Challenge.
Once you pick a game type, you’ll have to pick a character, being either male or female. The game is split into three different difficulty settings, making it easy to master the game even if you’re initially not very good. There are simple menus all the way through, explaining exactly what you have to do.
Aiming to putt the ball in Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes is a simple case of touching the edge of your screen on your Symbian S60 5th Edition device. Whichever edge you touch, and the location of where you press, determines the direction your character faces, and hence the direction the ball travels in. There’s a power bar to determine how hard you hit the ball – hold your finger down for longer, and the ball travels at a greater speed.
The graphics on the Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes are actually quite nice, in a cartoony SIMs type of way. It’s attractive and everything moves smoothly. The only thing we had an issue with was the ‘OK’ button in between games – appearing right on the edge of the screen it occasionally proved tricky to press.
Overall, we found the Quick Challenge a little too simple – at least in easy mode. Crank it up slightly to the Master Challenge, where you’re allowed less strokes, and it gets a lot harder, with angled courses and holes you have to think a bit more about. You’ll also find lots of unusual obstacles, such as fans or magnets to blow your ball off course.
There are lots of other game modes too – including different opponents, putting the pressure on you to beat your Nokia, a Hole in One Challenge – doing exactly what it says on the tin, Time Attack and a Par Challenge.
All-in-all, Mini Golf Challenge 99 Holes is very predictable, but still kind of fun. Or it is the first time round – we can’t imagine playing it again once completed, making the £4 it costs seem slightly expensive.
