Nokia-N8-officialWhen Symbian^3 was announced it was assumed to be a stopgap between the ageing S60 and the all-new Symbian^4 OS. Not so, according to Nokia. The company plans to make over 50 Million Symbian^3 devices over the next few years. Join us after the break to find out more…

Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo told industry analysts that Symbian^3 marked a real change in the way Nokia makes smartphones. For starters, Nokia phones will become much more 'software centric' and the focus will be on making the Symbian^3 OS consistent across all devices to make it easier to run the same apps on every phone.

“The Nokia N8 will have a user experience superior to that of any smartphone Nokia has produced,” said Kallasvuo, “I’m optimistic that the N8 will be the first step towards overcoming the challenges we face at the high end.”

While the much-touted MeeGo OS is coming, Kallasvuo stressed that it was aiming MeeGo at super-fast flagship phones. Symbian is here to stay for the mass market. “Symbian and MeeGo have different sweet spots,” he said, “We intend to capitalize on the unique strengths of each platform.”

How long after Symbian 3^ will Symbian 4^ be released?

It seems odd to be working on an OS further then one which is due to be released?

It is natural for people to avoid purchasing a device with software that is not future-proof or upgradeable.

If Symbian^ 3 cannot be upgraded to Symbian^4, people will put off purchasing Symbian^3 devices and wait for Symbian^4 devices.

In addition, Nokia must be very clear on the OS to use for different product lines.

    Eg.

    S60 – Low end C series.
    Symbian^3/^4 – Mid range E series
Meego – High end N series.

In addition, the OS development roadmap must be ongoing in tandem with device releases. For example, if Symbian^4 devices ship in Q1 2011, there must already be a plan to hit Symbian^4.5 in Q3 2011, and Symbian^5 in Q1 2012. Assuming that the development cycle is six months.
