Nokia C6 Software ReviewSince we got our hands on Nokia's mid-range handset – the Nokia C6 – we've been particularly impressed with the hardware. From the impressive spec, to the excellent QWERTY keypad, there's a lot to like. What about the software, however? Join us after the cut to find out...

The Nokia C6 features a 3.2-inch touchscreen display and, as with most other touchscreen devices in Nokia's line-up, runs Symbian S60 5th Edition. Although it's not a fast or as smooth as the Symbian ^3 OS on the Nokia N8, it's maturing all the time, and there's a lot to like about it.

Just like other Symbian S60 5th Edition devices – such as the Nokia N97 Mini – it's easy to add widgets to the home page of your Nokia C6. One of the apps on there and ready to go is Facebook, letting you chat with your mates and upload photos without having to download an additional application or browse Facebook on the C6's web browser.

Along with Facebook, you'll also find YouTube on the Nokia C6. This makes it easy to watch videos online – you'll get faster results using Wi-Fi than you will 3G, but it's still pretty impressive.

The web browser itself is standard Nokia fare, proving easy to use if a little sluggish in comparison to the excellent Opera Mobile app – available from the Ovi Store.

As a phone that's designed around messaging and social networking – with its QWERTY keyboard – it's no surprise that it's easy to set up an email account on the Nokia C6. There's an integrated email wizard to help get you started, and you can also use Nokia's excellent Messaging service.

Another widget that can be added to the home screen is a contacts bar, letting you add your four favourite contacts. With their photographs and names displayed, it's a great little feature, and it's easy to ring or text them at the touch of a button.

The Nokia C6 comes with Ovi Maps pre-installed as standard. It's a fantastic app, that gets better all the time. Features include free turn-by-turn navigation, letting you use the C6 as a sat-nav device. There's also a full Lonely Planet guide on there, offering advice on places you've never been before.

Overall, then, the Nokia C6 more than lives up to expectations on the software front, and along with excellent hardware, it's helps to make a cracking mid-range smartphone.

Check out PNHT.com’s modified port of C6 firmware to the 5800XM. The FW mod is much faster than the new 5800′s FW 51.0.006; very efficient use of both C drive and RAM as well. Basically a C6 without QWERTY and lower camera pixels…but you do retain fantastic stereo speakers, dual LED flash and carl zeiss lens…plus it weighs 33% less. Frankly, when I upgrade from my rejuvenated 5800 it will be to the upcoming N8! Nokia may lose a C6 sale with me but will retain a loyal fan and near term N8 buyer. I’ll keep the trusty 5800 as backup. Still, the C6 remains compelling at the revised price point…for those who do not yet have the 5800. :-)
