Locago is an Ovi Store app that allows you to use the GPS in your Nokia smartphone to tie in with crucial online sources. To do this, Locago brings together Wikipedia, Flickr and even the latest weather reports all together in one GPS-centric app, which makes it ideal for use with the Nokia X6, for example. Locago works by tapping into the GPS location of your smartphone and overlays it with information that it pulls from a variety of online sources. The first thing you’ll notice is that Locago isn’t the smoothest looking of apps. It’s essentially a Java app that is built of multiple layers. However, this does mean it loads quickly and we found no trouble setting it up and running the app.
It works by allowing you to enter searches of things in the local area, so ideal if you’re visiting or looking for a one-off specific shop, for instance. Search results are pulled in by closeness to your present location and you’ll even find a nice route planner built in. The routing software doesn’t seem quite on a par with Ovi Maps but you can plan to travel by car, on foot or even public transport, so it covers the main areas well enough.
The main appeal of Locago is that it gives you access to Wikipedia far more easily than firing up a web browser and searching. This is great if you’re on holiday and want to pull up a little local colour or history. What’s more, Locago also taps into Flickr, so you can pull up images of the area, which can help you to get your bearings.
Locago has a simple interface that hides away many of its features but you shouldn’t dismiss it because it lacks gloss. Sure, it’s competing with the might of Ovi Maps, so is easily overlooked but if you’re looking for an alternative take on what’s happening around you, it’s worth checking out.
