For years, TripAdvisor on the web has influenced the holiday destinations and eateries of choice for millions of holidaymakers and trippers worldwide. It covers pretty much everything you need: hotels, restaurants, things to do and flights, but without a few of the features you'll find on the main site such as vacation rentals and cruises. It's all laid out in a very straightforward manner.
Upon firing up the TripAdvisor app, the first thing you see is a column displaying links to the above categories, stripped off the flashy graphics you'll find on the website proper.
Despite how it looks, the app works exactly the way the site does. Touch the hotels link to search for a hotel by city, address or post code. Doing so brings up a list of the most recommended hotels, along with nearby things to do and places to eat, user reviews and photos.
If you've used the TripAdvisor site before it works in mostly the same manner. It does exactly what it's meant for. It's dead easy to use. However, despite the app telling you that it's acquiring your direction you'll find yourself always having to type where you're at, which does become bothersome.
However, the app itself also isn't so much an app as a link to the mobile site of TripAdvisor. You'll get pretty much the same experience by heading to the mobile TripAdvisor site via your Nok's web browser.
Its main appeal lies in being able to fire up the app and have the site instantly accessible, without having to tap in the site address, but with the ability to bookmark sites, the TripAdvisor app is hardly a necessity.
As a free app the TripAdvisor app is handy to have at hand to save you a few seconds, after all it's pretty much a link to the mobile TripAdvisor site filled with info on the latest hotel and restaurant reviews. But it's hardly a dedicated app.
