Powered by the Symbian S60 3rd Edition OS, the Nokia E5-00 offers everything we’ve come to expect of QWERTY devices, such as the Nokia E71 and Nokia E72. The OS has been around for a couple of years now, so is rock solid and reliable, with recent firmware updates bringing enhanced features such as Ovi Maps 3.3, Ovi Store 1.7 and the latest Facebook app.

The Homescreen of the Nokia E5-00 is something of a departure from the Nokia E72 as you’ll find you can add Contacts to the top of the page and scroll through them to find the right person to call. Below this you’ll find two smaller and more conventional bars that allow you access to your email, once you’ve set it up, and to your Calendar.
Along the foot of the screen is a taskbar pre-populated with six apps: Maps, Camera, Web, Facebook, Ovi Store and Chat. As with all aspects of the Homescreen, you can easily change these in the Personal Settings to whichever apps you like.
The Nokia E5-00 being a non-touch device, you navigate the screen using the function keys and the D-pad, which we found quick and responsive to use. Dig into the Menu of the Nokia E5-00 and you’ll find a whole host of other apps on offer. Rather than simply listing the array of apps on offer, Nokia has placed them by function. So, Media gives way to you Music Player, Podcasting, Shazam and Photo Gallery apps, for example, while naturally enough, office apps and utilities are hidden away under the Office banner.
Tap into Applications and you’ll find the pre-installed apps that don’t naturally fit into this structure, so you’ll find Vlingo, PTT, Location Font Magnifier and Message Reader amongst others on offer. If you want to install more apps you can always tap directly into the Ovi Store, which gives access to thousands of Nokia E5-00 specific apps, themes and games.
The Nokia E5-00 loads apps and utilities smoothly and quickly and getting around the device is quite quick and intuitive once you get the hang of the buttons. With a mix of business features as well as an increasing number of social media tools, this feels a well balanced device and certainly a nicely balanced and responsive one.
