Farewell to Ovi Files From October 1, 2010 Nokia will be discontinuing its excellent Ovi Files service letting you sync and access PC files. But don't worry, Nok fans, you won't lost any files as a result. Read on for more details, Ovi Files users.

In a message on the Ovi Files site, Nokia spreads word that Ovi Files will be discontinued from the start of next month.

If you use the Ovi Files service, Nokia advises that users "uninstall the Ovi Files Connector installed on your personal computer". Not sure how to do so? Nokia explains:

"To do this, execute the standard Windows or Macintosh uninstall procedure that came with your computer. You will not lose any files as a result of this service discontinuation. Ovi Files simply creates an 'online mirror' of the files saved on your Windows PC or Mac, so your original files will remain intact" even if some are selected as 'Anytime Files', says Nokia.

However, you'll still be able to share media, and sync and backup data to your PC using Nokia Ovi Suite software.

Nokia points out that Ovi Suite is not a direct replacement for Ovi Files, as it needs a wired connection between your PC and Nokia, but for those new to the service - it lets you sync your contacts, backup data, transfer videos, photos and music and manage messages.

Should Nokia dream up a direct Ovi Files replacement we'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime check out some of what Nokia Ovi Suite has to offer in this video:

That is sad news, I do use Ovi Files with my N97. Nokia just updated Ovi Files (Mac) to version 4.1.1006 on August 30 2010, I just got the pop up message this morning to update to the new version, then a few hours later I read here that the service is being discontinued in one month. WTF are you doing Nokia?

Not only that Ovi Suite is a crippled, buggy piece of software but it completely removed the file syncing support. The phone management through Ovi Suite seemed to have been developed by the kids, for the kids. Up to and including the N97 you could still get away with file syncing by managing your phone through PC Suite rather than Ovi Suite, but in their infinite wisdom Nokia decided to discontinue Ovi Files AND also starting with the new Symbian^3 phones like N8 or C7 the PC Suite support has been removed/banned/killed/discontinued/excluded!!!!!????? So, if you are more business oriented and file synchronization is IMPORTANT to you, then probably an Android or Blackberry is the way to go.
Nokia, you have a truly strange way of doing business (2 steps forward, one BIG step back) and you’re only getting better and better in driving your loyal customers away. No wonder why penetrating the US market truly becomes “mission impossible” for your smart phones!
