Ever since Ovi Maps 3.03 was launched earlier this year, we've had free turn-by-turn navigation on the majority of new Nokia smartphones. Ovi Maps has since been updated to version 3.04, and there's now a new update available. To find out more, join us after the break...
The latest update to Ovi Maps still retains the 3.04 build number, but with a couple of changes to the details. If you look in the about section of Ovi Maps 3.04, you should see a change from v3.04 10wk17 to v3.04 10wk32 after the update.
What do you get with the update, then? According to All About Symbian, Nokia has included fixes to bugs, and worked on improving its own Wi-Fi /Network based location system, helping your Nokia to find your location more quickly and more accurately, before GPS kicks in.
When trying out the latest version of Ovi Maps 3.04 on our Nokia N97 Mini, the software located our town within a second of clicking the map function – even though we'd moved more than 100 miles since last using Ovi Maps, and being indoors when first trying it out.
As always, there's a big red circle to highlight the area the handset thinks you're in, and this proved accurate to within a mile or so. Turning on Wi-Fi, it proved a lot more accurate, tagging our correct street within seconds.
Even without Wi-Fi, we found the software considerably faster and more accurate, with our Nokia N97 Mini finding its location well within a minute.
At nearly 1MB, the latest version of Ovi Maps is available to download over the air (OTA). If you have a restricted data download limit, or are worried about incurring costs, it's worth connecting to a Wi-Fi network before downloading.
As always, make sure you save all your files and contacts before making any changes to your handset.
