When is the Nokia N9 not the Nokia N9? When it's the Nokia E7. We've seen plenty of evidence to suggest that the QWERTY N9 we've been gawping at all along is the Nokia E7. Here we present our evidence for why the Nokia E7 is shaping up to be the first Symbian^3 device in the E Series range.
Recently we've seen shots and a video of the Nokia N9 - a sliding QWERTY keypad packing affair running MeeGo, as spotted on the web. But even before then we've seen a few shots of another handset also said to be the Nokia N9, except that it could actually be the Nokia E7.
While we've previously speculated upon the existence of the Nokia E7 under disguise as the Nokia N9, we think there's enough evidence to make a call on exposing the device as the Nokia E7. It's one we're sure to see in future, along with the Nokia N9 proper, and C7.
As i-Symbian.com reported a while back, the Nokia E7 could be a QWERTY toting AMOLED 4-inch touchscreen device, with an 8-megapixel camera, running Symbian^3 and cased in the same anodised aluminium we've seen in previous images and video of a device previously assumed to be the N9 measuring just 14mm in depth. Too much of a coincidence, no?
The folks at SlashGear seemed to agree when they said the "…Nokia E7 sounds a lot like the QWERTY-equipped Symbian^3 smartphone we've been seeing well-leaked in recent weeks, and that has been labelled the N9 or the N8-001/N8-002 by some." That was, of course referring to this report of a leaked release roadmap from Omio, who told SlashGear that they're 100-per cent sure of its source of the story, dubbing the E7 "a serious bid for messaging supremacy" with Symbian^3, AMOLED display, aluminium shell and a full QWERTY keyboard and tilting touchscreen.
This video also appears to display a C-series device, but it could well be that the 'C0-00' code on the back refers to a prototype device, rather than a C-series phone. Look again and it looks a lot like the Nokia E7 we've been hearing about.
Nobody's denying it exists. An XML profile for the Nokia E7 was even spotted online just a couple of days ago confirming that it, along with a Nokia C6-01 will run Symbian^3 with a 640 x 360 display with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. But we're convinced we've already seen it and we hope all will be revealed at Nokia World 2010.
