nokia-n8-available-for-under-300-poundsAlthough some of our readers have expressed disappointment at the newly released price of a SIM-free Nokia N8, all is not lost. Since it appeared on the Nokia Online shop for a not insubstantial £429, the Nokia N8 has since been spotted for £299.97 - a fantastic saving. Join us after the break to find out more...

A lot of people were hoping the Nokia N8 would launch with a sub-£350 price tag, so the recent pre-order price of £429 has proved a bit of a disappointment. Thankfully, Nokia fans could be in for a treat, with the Nokia N8 also appearing elsewhere for a bargain £299.97.

The Nokia N8 has made an appearance in the Tesco Catalogue, with a photograph, brief set of specs - including that fantastic 12-Megapixel camera - and a bargain price tag of £299.97.

While you can't buy the Nokia N8 from Tesco straight away - it's listed as 'currently out of stock' - we're hoping that the price is not just a printing error. The image from Tesco's catalogue also states "Coming soon to our range. We expect the launch date to be late september when this mobile should be available to order".

Fingers crossed that the Nokia N8 will be available for under £300, then. Will you be buying if so? Leave a comment below and let us know.

So do we begin to suspect that the ‘official’ Nokia pre-order price is some clumsy marketing bluff? That £299 price is printed in a hard copy Tesco Direct catalogue (seen it for myself) and still showing on the website too:

    http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.209-8479.aspx

This phone at £299 with contracts based on that value would be very nice. Puts it closer to the 5800XM when it launched, which the N8 appears to be a more natural progression from. Tesco Mobile currently show the N8 on a 12 Month contract for £185 plus £25 per month, that’s a total of £485 including 500mins cross network and 500GB data. The 24 month £35 deal through the official Nokia site adds up to £840. Granted, you get 12 months more calls and data, but that could easily be had for a tenner a month out of contract.

I’m starting to be a bit more hopeful now. If Tesco do stock the N8 at £299 sim free, I might even consider going for that option and getting a Three Mobile monthly sim to get Skype access over 3G, which O2, Voda, T-Mob, Orange, etc all block in the UK. Shame they only show the black one. I bet that’s it, black only at Tesco, boo-hoo!

Nokia Direct have added in some 18 month contracts now, the cheapest making a total price of £630 with 600 cross network minutes on T-Mobile, a drop of £200 already. Getting closer to Tesco’s £485 12 month 500 minute contract. A good sign, surely?

@Andrew – good work on the maths, my head was starting to ache with all the numbers flying around :)

The Tesco price is pay-as-you-go I believe. Unlocking with Tesco costs £20. So you can get an unlocked N8 for £319.97 all in.

Looking at the ‘feature’ tab on the Tesco website for the N8 at £299 it says against Network: Tesco Mobile. So its not sim-free for that price. I believe there is a problem buying a Tesco Mobile phone and trying to unlock it straight away? Anyone more info?

To answer my own question found this on Tesco Mobile website:

“If you wish to use another network’s SIM, you will need to arrange for it be unlocked. If this is the case, you must not insert another operator’s SIM card into the mobile without an unlatching code (which is not your PIN code). We will on request provide an unlatching code after 12 months starting from the date you activated your handset. If you activate your handset and use the Tesco Mobile network for less than 12 months before receiving an unlatching code, we will charge you a fee of £20 to unlock your handset.”

So yes, seems like you can unlock it for £20 as soon as you’ve bought it or for free after 12 months.

Tesco have now changed the price…

“We apologise that the incorrect price has been published in the AW10 catalogue – the correct price is £329.97 Expected launch date for this product is first week in October 2010.”

That’s still an amazing price for such a powerful handset. If the price stays that way, i’ll almost certainly buy.
