design-by-community-concept-1We've been following the Nokia Design by Community project ever since the start – where Nokia has asked readers of its official blog to help design a concept mobile phone. After months of deliberation, the final concept is here, and it looks fantastic. Join us after the break to find out more...

The Design by Community project has been running for a few months now, and it's been a fascinating journey. At every step – from deciding the form factor and the screen size – to working out what options it should have – Nokia fans have been able to vote on exactly what they want to see in their ideal smartphone.

With thousands of votes through Nokia Conversations, it's been a long process, but once the spec was finalised, the next step was to come up with a set of concept sketches. In keeping with the rest of the project, readers were once again able to choose their favourite, leading on to the final step of the Design by Community.

Once a winner was picked, Nokia designers got to work with proper concept renderings – and we think the result is truly stunning. The concept is called the Nokia U, and although it's obviously a Nokia – with design cues from the Nokia N8, among others, it looks truly space aged.

Don't just take our word for it, however. Check out the images below

What do you think of the Nokia U? Would you buy it? Leave a comment and let us know.

Yep, that looks nice, especially the thin build. But is it just a representation of the N8? >_>

It looks very good, but you don’t give any hint to what’s inside – no way i would buy a nice box at a smartphone price.

On the link to Nokia Conversations there is a broad description that. The OS is not specified. So:
If it’s Symbian, there’s no way i would buy it.

If it’s MeeGo/ Maemo, it depends. Not on price, but on what the final version of the OS would be, how much freedom the user would have left, and how the App ecosystem looks to be evolving.
