ovi-music-unlimted-goes-drm-free-frontNokia's Ovi Player has received an overhaul today, with v2.1.10304 of Ovi Music Unlimited now offering DRM-free music. As such, you'll be able to play downloaded MP3s on any device, as well as on your Nokia. To find out more, join us after the break...

Ovi Music Player is a handy little app for your PC which lets you organise and play back your music, and download new songs and albums. The download feature has been available for some time, thanks to Nokia's Ovi Music Unlimited service, with an unlimited downloads subscription available. However, Nokia has made some major changes to the latest version of Ovi Music Unlimited – v2.1.10304.

V2.1.10304 of Ovi Music Unlimited offers a new pay per download service, and unlike the unlimited downloads service this is completely DRM-free. That means that the MP3 files you download aren't limited to your PC and Nokia – but instead you'll be able to copy the files to your other audio devices, or even make your own music CDs.

The DRM-free MP3s are good quality, too, at 256kbps, and you'll be able to keep them indefinitely. At present, the unlimited subscriptions service retains its DRM protection – so you'll only be able to play back music on your Nokia and PC.

A bit confusing this post! The title is “Ovi Music Unlimited goes DRM free” but then you write that “At present, the unlimited subscriptions service retains its DRM protection”.

So am I correct that the tracks you pay for are DRM free?

Either I’m confused, or NokNok are.

AFAIK Ovi Music Unlimited is just a rebranded Comes with Music. Not ‘pay per download service’…right???

Hi NOK NOK, I wanted to clarify – track purchases made from Ovi Music are now DRM-free, which is great. Users who subscribe to unlimited downloads from Ovi Music can of course download as many tracks as they like, and keep them forever, but those downloads are DRM-locked. Thanks, Huw

@Nick – Nokia Music is now offering TWO services. Comes With Music is indeed now Ovi Music Unlimited and giving you WMA files as part of the CWM deal. This is still DRM and tied to one Nokia device and one PC.

However, your CAN NOW but and download MP3 files without it being a CWM deal – DRM-free and can be whacked on any PC or audio player – Nokia Music has widened its appeal :)

    Hope that helps?

I wonder if the \’sync with any device\’ option now includes the forgotten N900?

I an still astonished that to sync up my music I cannot do it through any Ovi software – have to use the sync option in Windows Media Player..
