Future Tech: Nokia Indoor Navigator App

nokia-indoor-navigatorWe’ve seen some pretty cool things over the past 48 hours, but some of the apps on display here at Nokia World 2010 have been mind blowing. One of our favourites is the Indoor Navigator app, a program that could make an appearance in future Nokia devices. Join us after the break for more…

At present, the Indoor Navigator is just a research project at Nokia, but it’s still deeply impressive. It uses the Wi-Fi chip in your Nokia to work out where the phone is to within a couple of feet, and it’s amazing how accurate it can be.

Although there’s obviously limited use for an indoors sat-nav app for regular Nokia users, it’s an app that could change how business work, with the ability to track and locate people in warehouses or bigger indoor spaces.

Quite how the mapping will work we’re not sure, as there’s obviously nobody to go round taking aerial photographs of the inside of your building – as there is with regular satellite navigation.

Still, it’s pretty impressive none-the-less, especially if you get to see it in action. Check out the photos below – we were standing below and slightly to the side of a huge indoor canepy, and the Indoor Navigator app picked our location exactly.

I suggest this could be used with two paired devices to measure a room…
Perfect for trades such as quantity surveyor, painter, …
Probably safer than measuring with lasers.
