Nokia Plug And Touch: Make Your TV Touchscreen!

nokia-plug-and-touchAs well as the glistening new Nokia handsets on show at Nokia World 2010 - such as the Nokia C3 Touch and Type - Nokia World is about software and development. One of the best apps we've seen so far is Nokia Plug and Touch, a futuristic app that can turn any old TV into a touchscreen wonder. Join us after the break to find out how...

With the Nokia N8 on its way - a device that features an HDMI-out cable - hooking up your mobile phone to your TV is set to be easier than ever. From watching your own HD movies, to watching films you've stored on the device to keep you entertained, handsets like the Nokia N8 make great multimedia centres.

Controlling them always seems like an issue, however. Even with the N8 plugged into your TV via HDMI, you'll still have to keep going back to the phone to skip films or make adjustments. Everything changes with Nokia Plug and Touch - and app that promised to turn your TV into a touchscreen wonder.

Plug and Touch uses the camera in the Nokia N8 to work out exactly what you're up to. It takes photos at 10 frames per second, with the processor in the handset keeping an eye on you. If you stay in one place for a certain time - with your finger hovering for longer than 0.5 seconds, for instance, the phone works out that you're trying to press a button. It's also possible to scroll, and carry out other functions all via giant actions.

We found it worked surprisingly well, although there's a slight (inevitable) lag as the phone works out what you're trying to do. It's very minimal, however, and deeply impressive. At the moment, Nokia Plug And Touch is still in the research phase, but we'd love it to become a reality.

We quite like the idea of being able to play Angry Birds on our modestly-sized LCD TVs using Nokia Plug and Touch. Got any other suggestions? Let us know.

This is amazing! Where can you download the app/plug-in for my N8 so I can ‘actually’ do this with my television?
