The ominous sounding Dawn of the Fly 2 brings fly swatting goodness to the Ovi Store, in an addictive time sapper that we're actually pretty taken with. It's free too, and well worth a download. Read on to hear why in our Dawn of the Fly 2 review.
If any of you out there are familiar with the slew of mobile games developed by the folk at Breakdesign, you'll know they make some of the better free Ovi Store games around. Dawn of the Fly 2 is no exception.
Flys have invaded the world, and it's down to you to swat them away from wreaking havoc upon humanity. You do this by squishing them on your touchscreen Nok as quickly as you can to get the best score.
You control a robot named Splot - a fly destroyer with a penchant for splatting winged things. The gameplay is simple. Splot stands stationary within a battle area surrounded by three rows of grey blocks indicating Splot's attach areas. If a fly enters one of the grey areas it can be killed by tapping that section.
Tap the furthest area and you'll fire a missile, or tap the closer areas to swat, or eat the fly. The latter doesn't don't take up gas, which you can also use for your more 'special' abilities. Gas is used up by missile attacks and, farts. If the bugs get too close, tapping on Splot enables him to fire out a lethal dose of methane to protect himself.
Run out of gas and you're left with the basic swatting and eating attacks. Thankfully your gas meter refills, but you'll still need to vary your attacks to avoid running out, lending some strategy to the otherwise basic (but addictive) gameplay that at times isn't at all that dissimilar to That Roach Game South Africa.
Dawn of the Fly 2 is easy, for the first ten flies you swat. After, that things get progressively more difficult as you begging to find yourself overrun with the bugs. Farting certainly comes in handy here.
If it all gets a bit much there's an excellent tutorial that lets you know how to play without getting in a muddle. Presentation is also excellent throughout, with simple, but clean easy on the eyes visuals. Even the soundtrack is pretty nifty.
If we were to criticise, it's that there aren't any extra modes, but for a free game Dawn of the Fly 2 offers more than enough to keep any Nok gamer satisfied. On an N97, we also had to flip out the QWERTY keypad to get it in landscape view, though you'll find it hardly detracts from the fun.
Dawn of the Fly 2 is a fun and free Ovi Store title that offers simple, addictive gameplay with a hint of strategy for those in pursuit of the highest scores. Download it now.
