Remember River Raid on the Atari? It's back, on the Ovi Store. For something decidedly old-school looking RiverRaider delivers retro style gaming to touchscreen Nokia smartphones in this utterly playable water-based ship shoot-em-up.
The scrolling shoot-em-up, released back in the 80s when skirts were longer and jeans were less tight is now playable on Nokia touchscreen devices and is just as playable.
Like the original the aim is to guide a battleship through enemy infested waters patrolled by gunships, while taking care of business in the sky and land using your tap activated weaponry.
The controls are the big change here. To steer simply move your compatible touchscreen Nok in the direction you wish to. We played RiverRaider using an accelerometer packing Nokia N97. Contrary to initial worries, the controls work a treat. Whether you're diving enemy fire or steering away from colliding with the hazardous cliffs, you'll find RiverRaider easy to control. It's as simple as moving your hand.
Firing your cannon at enemies is just as simple. Simply tap on the screen where you wish to fire your bullets at enemy helicopters, ships or tanks. Occasionally you'll need to stock up on fuel, which you do by gliding over the fuel tankers. Throw in shields, weapons and lots of on-screen enemies and RiverRaider is a delightful reminder of when games were much simpler.
Whether you remember River Raid from the Atari days or not, RiverRaider is a delightful little accelerometer controlled game. It's not the most exciting Ovi Store title, but what it lacks in the wow factor it makes up for in being very playable. Still unsure? There's a free version called RiverLite.
