Ovi Store App: META Friend Locator Review

META Friend Locator is a decent mapping app that works perfectly alongside Nokia's own Ovi Maps app. Letting you easily track your friends, and let them know where you are, it's worth a look. Join us after the break to find out more about META Friend Locator...

Start up META Friend Locator, and your Nokia will automatically detect your connection settings. The first thing you'll have to do is register, which is free and easy.

Unlike other mapping apps – such as Google Maps – META Friend Locator features much simpler maps. The result isn't so aesthetically pleasing, but the maps do load a lot quicker, and take up less data as well.

Click on Menu, and you'll be presented with a simple and easy to navigate menu. Selecting Social Service lets you easily track your friends, or mark your own location so your mates can log in and find out where you are.

As with most other sat-nav apps, there's an extensive points of interest list, with details of nearby shops, pubs, supermarkets and much more.

You can add favourites to META Friend Locator, and it's easy to find your friends' favourites as well. If you're new to the area, you can search for any nearby location of note.

META Friend Locator may lack the polished feel of premium services such as Ovi Maps, then, but if you're just trying to track your mates down, or want to share your location, it's worth a try.

Does it work like the latitude* function in google maps so that the app does not have to be left running to update your location or does the app have to be left running? Leaving a positioning app running zaps battery.

    * When running latitude in Google maps it fires up at 2-to-40 minute intervals, gets your position, updates your position online, then shuts down. The interval between updates depends on how far you’ve moved since the last update; the more your move the more frequent the updates. Friends can then track you using the latitude web page or google maps on their phone.
