Blast Blox is a shape shifting puzzle game filled with 40 levels to test your quick thinking. With lots of different types of blocks to shift this isn't your run-of-the-mill block puzzler. But is is any good? Read our Blast Blox review to find out.
There's so many block-related puzzlers on the Ovi Store that it's difficult to tell how each is different from the many Tetris clones available. Blast Blox is different. It features all the block busting gameplay you'd expect from the genre, but it has a neat twist.
You'll be rotating and spinning bricks as per usual, but there's an elemental angle, with fire, water and bomb blocks doing different things, thinking fast about how to land individual blocks is the key to progressing.
Bomb blocks blow up ordinary bricks to turn them into wood. So when a fire block emerges the aim is to get it facing a wooden block to burn it. Burning wooden blocks turns them into water, which then drain off at the bottom of the screen to progress. Drain enough water and you'll move onto the next level.
To begin with the levels are almost too simple, helped by the slow speed of the blocks. Of course you can speed them up by tapping the blue bar at the bottom, but during later levels you'll need a little more time to figure out how you want each block to land. The different elements lend a genuine sense of strategy and quick thinking - great for playing on the train.
Putting a downer on things are the controls. Tapping on the descending blocks rotates them, while tap on the left or right of the blocks forces them in either direction. Unfortunately the controls are at times very unresponsive, only working at the last moment, giving you less time to react - a real pain.
Despite its foibles Blast Blox is a decent puzzler for those looking for something (slightly) different from the norm. It's hardly the best Ovi Store puzzler, but worth a play on the train, and not a bad free title to have on your Nok.
