OK, so it's still not out for regular Nokia users yet, but MeeGo is starting to take shape. If you're a developer, or fancy having a look at progress, then MeeGo Version 1.1 is now available. Join us after the cut for more information...

MeeGo is Nokia's premium operating system, and is set to launch on the company's high-end smartphones. It replaces the Maemo 5 OS found on the Nokia N900, and will offer an alternative to Symbian ^3.

MeeGo Version 1.1 is the latest version, and is available for developer download.  Before you download, it's important to note that this isn't a finished product – or even MeeGo with a UI that's suited to regular Nokia users.

Instead, MeeGo 1.1 is a generic version, which is available simply so developers and software people can get to grips with the MeeGo code. As a result, there should be lots of great apps available for the OS when it launches.

According to Nokia Conversations, MeeGo 1.1 features cellular and sensors built into the core OS. There's also a basic handset package, which features voice calling, SMS messaging, web browsing, photo viewing and more.

If you want to get your hands on MeeGo 1.1, it's available from the MeeGo website. The handset release will apparently work on a Nokia N900, while there's also a netbook release of MeeGo 1.1.

Unless you know what you're doing – you're a developer, or software engineer, for instance – it's worth avoiding MeeGo for now. As Nokia Conversations points out, “MeeGo is intended for as-yet-unreleased handsets and other mobile computers. Really. Don't do it unless you're a developer or a phone manufacturer”.

That said, if you do stick MeeGo on your Nokia N900, and either mess up or want to install the latest Maemo software again, it's available from nokia.com/n900.
