Nokia N8: How To Transfer Photographs

So you've got your Nokia N8, and taken some snaps with that fantastic 12-Megapixel camera – you'll be wanting to transfer your photographs to your computer to check them out then. Join us after the break to find the best ways to get your snaps from your Nokia N8 to your computer...

One of the bits we like the most about the Nokia N8 is that it offers loads of options. There are several different ways to get your photographs from the Nokia N8 to your computer, for instance – making it easy to find a way that suits you best.

Without a doubt, the easiest way of transferring your photographs in one go, is to plug your Nokia into your computer using the micro USB cable. If you're running Windows 7, the Nokia N8 will be recognised automatically, with a pop up window letting you carry out different tasks.

Simply pick a program to transfer your photographs – we used Windows Live Photo Gallery – and click 'Import Pictures and Videos. Job done!

Nokia N8 Symbian ^3 Guide: Everything You Need To Know

If you want to share your snaps with other people, it may be worth copying your photographs to a memory stick instead of your computer, using Nokia's new USB on the go technology. Plug the USB on the go cable (which should be in the box of your Nokia N8) into the micro USB port on the side of the device.

Then plug a USB memory stick into the cable – as soon as you do so Nokia's file manager should pop up automatically.

As default, the photographs will be saved on the E: (Mass Memory). Click on this option, and your photographs should be in the Images folder.

If you only want to copy a couple of photographs, open the Images folder, followed by the Camera folder, and find the folder you want to copy – as with a regular compact camera, your Nokia N8 will create a new sub folder every time you start taking a new set of photos.

Tap the folder you want to copy (tap Images if you want to copy everything) and hold. After a second or two, another menu will pop up, letting you copy the folder. Simply select your memory stick, and wait for the photographs to copy.

If you're just transferring a couple of photographs at a time, and your computer has Bluetooth, it's also possible to send all of your photographs wirelessly. We'll be bringing you a guide on setting up Bluetooth on your Nokia N8 next week – so make sure you bookmark our Symbian ^3 guide, and let us know if there's anything you're confused about.

The N8 has Bluetooth 3 so if someone already has the a BT3 chipset in their computer, wireless transfer should be a breeze as it utilises wifi-N speeds.

How about online sharing directly from the N8? I think it’s not possible out-of-the-box very easily to e.g. faceb00k so would you recommend pixelpipe or something similar?

  • Phil B

Hey Mjoa – it is actually possible to share photographs directly with social networking sites, without having to do anything overly complicated. As mentioned above, we’re putting together a Symbian ^3 guide – http://noknok.tv/2010/10/19/nokia-n8-symbian-3-guide-everything-you-need-to-know/ – so we’ll look at covering this soon.

As you mention though, Pixelpipe is a very good alternative – and also something we’ll cover in the guide. Thanks for the suggestion. Anything else you’d like to see covered?

    Cheers. Phil

    Hi Phil,
Cheers for the answer! There’s one thing that I’m (well, the wife, actually, as she has the N8) missing, namely support for Ovi Chat. Do you know any way of using Ovi IM on the N8 (they seem to have pulled the IM app for some reason)?

    BR,

  • Phil B

    Mjoa – no worries.

I’ll try and dig out an old SIM card and see if I can sort out Ovi Chat between an N8 and a C7 – will let you know if it works.

    Cheers
    Phil

I’d like to know if it’s possible to transfer files to my network (NAS) Mybook hard drive like I used to be able to with my trusty N95. I’ve looked at the remote drive, but I can’t seem to get this working.

I have however managed to log in to my NAS by entering the local ip address 192.168.0.xx:9000 into the web browser. I could use this as a ‘work around’ but would prefer to copy files using the file manager.

    The N8 is awesome

    (excellent website by the way)

@Chris. The Nokia N8 comes with three different cables, two USB and one HDMI, so you’ll easily be able to connect the device to your laptop and download those pics. Plug in the USB cable and sync with Ovi Suite and let the software copy them all over.
