Nokia N8: Download Swype!

A little while ago we brought you news of Swype software for the Nokia N8. The app has taken a couple of months to get to the Ovi Store, but it's now available to download for your Nokia N8. Join us after the cut to find out more...

Swype is an excellent app that lets you input text by tracing lines on a QWERTY keyboard, using one fluid motion rather than tapping at the keys individually.

Swype available for Symbian ^3

The result, according to Swype, is a much easier and faster way of inputting text, although it'll take you some time to accustom to the new method of typing. You will have to use your Nokia N8 in landscape orientation to get Swype, however, as there's currently no portrait keyboard.

At present, Swype supports English, Spanish, FrenchCA and PortugueseBr, with more language support on the way soon. According to the Ovi Store, it's also possible to switch languages directly using the keyboard on Swype.

Now it's available, we'll be trying out Swype on our Nokia N8 in the next week. Check back here for a full review.

    This is really cool! Downloaded and tried – works like it should. Now what we need is the new keyboard that doesn’t fill the whole screen but rather shows the actual field where one wants to type..

    @mjoa

    How long have you tried it for? Easy to adjust to, or does it take a while?

    Apparently a half-screen keyboard is on its way in the new year. `Not sure whether it’ll be compatible with Swype or not though.

    It’s nice but until the portrait keyboard is released it’s a bit pointless as it’s more suited to one handed use.

    @Phil B,
    Installed it on the Wife’s N8 last week. We’ve both found the learning curve OK. Neither of us is native so between the two of us we don’t use English and therefore swyping doesn’t always work (but it still works OK if you lift your finger between key presses – just as without swype – with one extra step of having to tap select (or hit space) on each word). I’d say it’s a no-brainer for anyone with an S-3 handset.

    What I meant was that for non-English-dictionary words (assuming English is chosen as the main dictionary) it’s possible to type words just as without Swype.

    Thanks for getting back to me, it’s interesting to see new options for inputting text, I’ve never been overly impressed with touchscreens over hardware keypads before. Perhaps this will change that. I’ll download it now and see how I get on!

    Is there a custom dictionary for Swype? I presume not.

    By the way, your grasp of English is impressive for a 2nd language! I wish other languages were more of a priority in the UK.

    Its cool but when i try for a couple month there is a warning “beta version has expired” and after that swype didn’t function again in my n8. Why my ponsel like this? Any idea.
