We can't wait to see the first MeeGo smartphone next year, but while we wait it seems like MeeGo is getting stronger and stronger. Originally an alliance between Nokia and Intel, AMD has now joined the party. Join us after the cut to find out more...

MeeGo is the result of Nokia and Intel getting together, and joining their Maemo and Moblin operating systems. Both Maemo and Moblin were open source, and MeeGo will continue in a similar fashion.

What the world thinks of MeeGo

Although it doesn't have its own operating system to add, chip manufacturer and Intel rival AMD has now also joined the MeeGo OS Alliance.

According to IT Proportal, AMD joining the alliance will “provide "operational resources" to the open source project to make the operating system compatible with its accelerated processing units APUs”.

AMD is already a member of the Linux Foundation, which supports MeeGo, so the chip manufacturer could play a big part in the development of MeeGo.

The first MeeGo smartphones and netbooks are set to ship in early 2011, and the operating system will appear on high-end Nokia devices – such as the replacement to the Maemo-based Nokia N900.
