Nokia N8 Start Issues: Official Nokia Response

Although the vast majority of the feedback we've been getting on the Nokia N8 has been positive, we've seen a couple of articles in the past few days where users are reporting issues with turning on their Nokia N8. Join us after the cut to find out Nokia's official response...

Although the Nokia N8 is on target to become Nokia's biggest selling smartphone ever, a couple of rogue handsets have apparently suffered from issues when starting. Nokia's Executive Vice president Niklas Savander spoke to Nokia Conversations to reassure Nokia customers that the power on/off issue affecting some Nokia N8s is only affecting a "limited" amount of devices and that Nokia has taken immediate precautionary measures across the N8 product range.

No worries, however, as Nokia thinks its tracked down the issue. Savander said: "Yes we do [know the source of the problem], we have traced it done to the way we assemble the engines. We have as a precautionary measure taken immediate action across the product."

"It is a small number," of those affected. "We have a very good monitoring system where we also get a lot of positive feedback, so the consumers are loving their N8s.

"But we need to make sure that these limited instances get fixed as well.

"If a consumer feels their device is impacted by this, immediately contract Nokia Care centre this is covered by the standard warranty."

But, overall, Nokia N8 users are more than chuffed with their N8 handsets, despite this problem affecting the unfortunate few. The great news is the phone is under warranty for that extra piece of mind. If you are in the very unlucky few to suffer from technical problems with your Nokia N8, remember that the handset is covered by Nokia's usual warranty. As such, contact Nokia Care and ask for their help.

Owners of other new Nokia handsets need not worry. Asked if the issue will affect other devices, the Nokia boss said "No this is a small number of devices and we have taken the precautionary measure across the range."

I have had this problem with my N8. It has restarted a few times on it’s own and has gone completely dead twice. The first time I looked on the Nokia forum for a solution and one person had put their N8 in the freezer for 10 minutes. I had photos and videos of my 2 year old daughter that I hadn’t backed up to my PC and I didn’t want to lose them, so I thought I should give it a go, and to my surprise my N8 was working again! I quickly made a backup and It worked ok (a couple more self restarts) for about a week and now it has died again. I will do the freezer trick just so I can get a backup and arrange for it to be replaced under warranty.
However, I will be sticking with the N8. It is a fantastic phone, much better than the iPhone!!
I will still recommend this phone to anyone, my Wife has one too and she has had no problems at all.

Hmm i would not do that if i was you. If you again look at the Nokia Website it says that if you do that then it can break the phone AND your warrinty wont cover it as it will be liquid damage. Your phone is broken. Take it back and get a new one.

The truth is nearly all new technology has some issues in the first batch, I have an N8 and it’s fine, but in the big scale of things a few faulty devices are to be expected, as there must be millions of N8s being manufactured. It’s like the whole “Toyota brake” issue last year, yeah there was a slight fault, but all the supposed accidents caused by this were later found to be due to driver error, the manufacturer fixed it and honestly I noticed nothing new in my car after, but in this day and age things tend to get blown out of proportion. Even the whole iPhone 4 “antenna gate”, was pretty much a non-issue, having tested one, I found the call quality much better than most HTC handsets (though not up to N8 standard) and I tried replicating that signal loss on the handset and literally one bar dropped after holding it a while in that weird position, but even this could have been normal network behaviour.

I’ve found the N8 to be rock solid, really well built, it even dropped out of my pocket the other day and came away without a scratch. And maybe I’m in a minority, but I think having the battery sealed into the device is actually a good thing, as there’s very little loose parts and in my view makes the N8 really sturdy and long lasting. Now I can’t wait for the N9 lol, hope Nokia continue this brilliant construction on future N-Series, as I usually change phones every few months when a new device comes out.

@Jsssh don’t do any home DIY on your N8, don’t open it, or do any of that weird freezer stuff, you”ll probably invalidate the warranty. Just send it to a Nokia Service Centre and they’ll repair or replace it.

I think Nokia has handled this issue very well by openly accepting that the problem exists and has taken measures to address the issue. This will add to the confidence level of Nokia’s product and the way the company openess in addressing to the individual needs of its users. — Well done Nokia –

you will see a lot of people having the same problem. I had to spend $ 120 to get it back to the seller after suffering complete shut down of the phone several times in one week. It started just a few minutes after taking the phone out of the package!
Have been a Nokia follower for many years, but this too much to me. Seller responded fast to the problem, Nokia sent me a standard message after 8 days!

I am on my third N8 and as such unless I back up photos daily, lose them evertyime it dies. I love the phone but can’t take it anymore. It dies when i’m in a converstation tehn it just will not start up again. My last try is with Nokia themselves as I am not getting the support from T Mobile, they just want me to change to another phone.

MY NOKIA HAS RECENTLY SHUT OFF AND I WAS UNABLE TO RESTART IT. I TOOK IT BACK TO CAR PHONE WAREHOUSE WHO SENT IT OFF. AFTER 10 DAYS WAS TOLD THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPAIR IT SO I WILL BE SENT A NEW ONE. THIS TURNED OUT TO BE A REFURBISHED ONE IN TERRIBLE CONDITION, FULL OF SCRATCHES AND DENTS, WHERE MY NOKIA N8 WAS IN ABSOLUTELY MINT CONDITION, AS ARE ALL MY PHONES. I COMPLAINED TO NOKIA, AND STILL AWAITING AN ANSWER AS TO IF I WILL GET A NEW PHONE.
WHY SHOULD I HAVE SOMEONES SECOND HAND PHONE, WHILE I HAVE THE PRIVILEDGE OF PAYING FOR MY DAM TOP TARIFF WHILE IM STILL WAITING.
TO TOP IT ALL, I DIDNT BACK UP MY DATA, AND HAVE LOST ALL MY PHOTOS FOR MY NEW GRAND-DAUGHTER, VIDEOS AND ALL MY CONTACTS, WHICH THEY SAY THEY CANNOT RETRIEVE, CAN OWNING THIS PHONE GET ANY WORSE.
