Nokia N8 Startup Problems Blown Out of Proportion
By Phil Barker on November 22,

We've seen a number of hysterical articles on the internet relating to the Nokia N8 and problems with the phone failing to start. It looks like the problem has been blown way out of proportion, however. Read on after the break to find out more...

Last week, we spotted an article complaining about problems on the Nokia N8, with a review handset failing to start.

We've managed to get hold of several Nokia N8s over the past couple of months, and none of our review handsets have suffered from the startup issue.

Nokia N8 Start Up Issues: Official Nokia Response

It seems like the Nokia N8s suffering from problems are also in the tiny minority, with only a few owners out of hundreds of thousands making complaints.

That's not to say there's no issue – but if you are in the minority that's struggling to turn on your Nokia N8, don't worry. Your Nokia N8 will be fully covered by Nokia's comprehensive warranty, so if you are having trouble, you'll be able to return it in order to get it fixed or replaced.

We've already brought you Nokia's official response to the reports, but in case you missed it check out the video of Niklas Savander below:

I’ve been a Nokia user for years, owned two N95s, one N97 and am now using an iphone3GS. Recently bought a N8 mainly for the 12mp camera. One week into using the N8 it went into deep sleep. It’s been 2 weeks now since I’ve sent it back to the dealer and am still waiting for news from him. Nokia said that it is under warranty and will replace with a new set if it cannot be repaired. My main worry is what if they replace it with a new set with the same problem. What can Nokia do to guarantee it will not happen again with the new replacement. So much for loyalty and am still worried.

Hmmm….for a global giant, Nokia’s demeanor was refreshingly honest…they just accepted it was an issue, and said the warranty covered it.

They actually empathized with the customers who have the problem.

Absolutely no blaming the customer…they could have said the customer must have roughed up their device, causing the problem, but they did not. Contrast this with the a certain other phone manufacturer that said the customer was to blame for holding the phone a certain way.

Global giant, yet honest and caring…

Chalk up a win for Nokia!

I do not know whether this problem is small or big. Fact of the matter is that my new N8 does not work properly. The battery stays alive only for about 3 hours without using the phone!!! and many app do not open properly. the camera opens when it wants to. i have taken several photos but have not been open the gallery yet!!
best is that I took it to a famous nokia care center where nobody knew what to do with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am contemplating my next step. Any suggestions??????

@ Richard 8 Ha ha, dude, Nokia no longer makes phones like they used to. I\’ve had over 35 phones and 29 of them were nokia. From the legendary 3310 to the near latest X6 (which i declared to be the last nokia i\’d ever buy) Out of these 29 models i had it really bad with 1108,5610, 6110, 6630,7610,5800, N85, N96, N72, N70 and finally the X6.
Over the years the quality and the after sales services have been an issue. This can easily be explained with my experience of owning the X6. A month after purchase the phone had zero signal reception. Took it to the nokia care center 2 weeks under observation and 2 months and 4 emails later later i get the phone back completely scratched. Furious i sent it back along with another angry mail threatening to sue them. Finally after another week and a half i got a new hand set. I swore that day to be the last. I really wanted to buy the N8 but my past experiences advices me otherwise.

Loyalty doesn\’t mean s**t these days.

    Who knows?

N8 is critical for Nokia to reassert itself into the smart phone market. As a result, the criticism is not underserved.

The loss in market capitalisation is fairly minimal, so I don’t think personally that the “engine issue” has blown out of proportion.

I have had a N8 for a few weeks and have no freezing or lag problems with installed apps. I am very happy with the phone, now I just need those update (portrait qwerty, browser, share feature)

I have had this problem with my N8, but I still am a big Nokia fan. The main downside to this type of problem (would be the same with the iPhone) is that the photos and videos stored on the device since the last backup are lost. Nokia (or Apple) should provide a service to retrieve this data if possible. I have lost some photos and videos, only a few, but they were important to me.
So I recommend (whatever phone you have) to backup your data frequently.
I agree with Duncan – It would be good if ovi share (like I had on my N95) was updated for the N8. You can upload to ovi, but it isn’t as easy as it could be.
Other than that I am really pleased with my N8; the picture quality is amazing and the videos too, you can really see how good they are when you connect it up to a 50″ screen with the HDMI cable!

HI I am in the market for a new breed of a mobile phone and had almost signed over to a Nokia N8 when one of the staff at the store let slip , maybe intentional that there had been trouble with this model – he’d read about in the local newspaper. I have since read the afore mentioned comments written over the past few days and am quite confused now. Any further comments?

  • Jssssch

I would definitely get one Judy. My Wife has one and she has had no trouble with hers. Also it is very easy to use and if you get stuck they have plenty of tutorials on this website.

I was a Nokia fan fm the beginning. I also used N-80,E-90 communicator. This time also bought an N8 during my business trip to Bangkok though I already have an i Phone. But within two days it went out of order and failed to turn on once I came back to Bangladesh. Surprisingly Local Nokia care doesn’t have any idea about n8 switching prob! They told me that they can make it alright against 400$ ! Who can guaranty it will not be the same?
I must say that as it has become a prob with n8 over the world that’s why Nokia should take immediate measure to retain it’s popularity. Otherwise Nokia will loose smart phone market as I have decided not to buy any Nokia set in future.
Shame Nokia, shame on ur designer. Shame on ur customer care.

Just gone from a Blackberry to a N8. Worst move ever. Phone looks good, great spec -just doesnt like being touched, signal disappears the minute you touch the handset- calls cut out – wont dial, connection error – does everything apart from being able to make a call. vodafone (Uk Network) replaced it as it was only one week into contract. On my second one now (today) and will let you know the outcome.

Well yep i succumbed after all this time and not getting a new phone to getting a nokia N8 (my original v3 since new still working), my phone after 1 week has failed to startup if everyone has been having lots of problems why has my retailer sold this to me, is it that hard to open up the boxes make the fix (probly a software update) reshrink wrap and all is well, but no, continue selling something that is not ready and generally give your customers the message that.. well… we sold this many X, but only this many Y were not happy and well thats ok really cause there is more that are happy so that dont really dent our big fat company. Example i recently cancelled my internet with a big fat company who seems to as all companies when they get past a certain point loose sight of what it is that they provide, A SERVICE, now i paid nearly $200 to release my self from them and like nokia which i may just do the same thing again, if your or any other companies, a customer would pay that sort of cash to not be with or not use your products (i know your just the manufacturer mr nokia) you really need to take a step back and look at your long term goals cause i no longer make the same mistakes twice… even if it costs me$$$

my N8 died, sent it away for repair or replace and they said it had water damage, i was left with a phone on contract and a BIG its my problem. The phone was never put in water and was left speechless. it turns on but is locked on language select, screen touch doesnt work a t all…
Am very disappointed as they have just sent phone back and no outcome
    NOT HAPPY
