RaceChrono works with both older Nokia handsets and new ones, such as the Nokia N8 or Nokia C7. As long as your handset features an integrated GPS chip, there's no need for any other peripherals.
For those of you wanting to know how quickly your car can travel, there are a number of different performance tests available with RaceChrono. You can measure the quarter mile, for instance, or the time taken to get to 60ft.
You can also measure 0-60mph and 0-100mph, along with 0-100kph and 0-200kph, mirroring performance tests offered in most car magazines. It's even possible to measure top speeds.
RaceChrono isn't just about straight line speed, with the software letting you time yourself when on track. You can download specific tracks, or even record new tracks when you travel round them.
This means you'll be able to monitor your speeds through specific corners, and see if you're improving or getting worse.
We tried RaceChrono on a couple of different Nokia handsets, and both proved quick to get a GPS reception. RaceChrono will never replace dedicated timing gear if you're chasing fractions of a second – at least not without investing in additional GPS peripherals – but it is pretty accurate for a free app, and it gives you a good indication of your car's performance.
The app is at its most impressive on track. The vast array of data and information can be confusing, but it's an amazingly useful app once you've done a few laps of a track, with the ability to view a particular corner, and see the exact route you took around it, along with speeds through specific speed traps.
Overall, RaceChrono is a handy app if you like cars and intend to take them to the limit. It could be a little easier to use – the menus can be unintuitive at times. The onscreen buttons are large and finger-friendly, however, making it quick and easy once you know what you're doing.
