Put the Nokia N8 and the Nokia C7 together and they both shine in their own ways. While the Nokia C7 takes the plaudits for the most attractive and eye-catching design, the Nokia N8 counters by having the best build quality, with an anodised aluminium casing that puts just about every other smartphone to shame.
The Nokia N8 has a fairly minimal design, but the bulky camera housing – a necessity to incorporate the 12-Megapixel camera's shutter mechanism – spoils the lines of the phone slightly.
The Nokia C7 goes one better, with a camera that sits flush with the rear of the handset, allowing for a much thinner casing and a more cohesive overall design.
The Nokia C7 is also the more attractive handset from the front, with curved edges and neatly integrated buttons that make it look more modern than the Nokia N8.
However, while the stainless steel backplate and metal screen bezel add a touch of class and strength, the C7 can't match its sibling when it comes to build quality. We really like the Nokia N8's uni-body design, with the anodised aluminium chassis proving incredibly robust.
We like the buttons on the front of the Nokia C7 – with the call and end keys proving more usable than the touchscreen options offered on the Nokia N8. Things are reversed when it comes to the side buttons, however, with the Nokia N8 offering larger buttons that are more comfortable to use. The Nokia N8 also offers an HDMI port – which is sadly absent on the Nokia C7.
The Nokia N8 has the better design when it comes to the location of the microSD card – it's easily accessible from the side of the phone, unlike the Nokia C7, which requires you to remove the battery first in order to access it.
With the honours evenly matched, then, picking a favourite is bound to be a tough task. We love the super suave design of the Nokia C7, but find the allure of the Nokia N8's fantastic camera and bomb-proof build quality too much to resist.
