Ovi Store App: Lucky Octopus Review

Although you're probably trying to forget this year's World Cup if you're an England fan, the chances are you'll still remember Paul the Octopus – a creature that correctly 'predicted' all of the matches. In a similar vein, you can now download Lucky Octopus for your Nokia – read on after the jump to find out what it's all about...

According to the makers of Lucky Octopus, “this lucky octopus, using its unimaginable psychic powers, flawlessly decided the outcome of the football world cup, will now predict your fate and fortune through this fun little application for your mobile phone”.

Before you get too excited, Paul himself isn't actually involved. Throughout the 2010 World Cup, Paul was offered two separate buckets of food – each with a different nation's flag stuck to it. Whichever flag he went to would be the winner, it was claimed before the matches.

Although just a bit of fun, Paul correctly 'predicted' every single match in the World Cup, with some teams even claiming that the octopus had 'jinxed' them! With Lucky Octopus, you'll be offered similar yes/no questions for a virtual Paul to answer.

There are loads of pre-defined questions on Lucky Octopus, and most are similar to those found on a Magic 8 Ball – Will I find love, What should be fun to do today – along with sporting questions such as Who will win the Cricket World Cup.

When we tried clicking on the latter, an animated 'Paul' swam towards a bucket of food stating The Party is on!. Well, that's unlikely, for a start, but we'll let you know if it comes true!

The most frustrating thing about Lucky Octopus is that it's surprisingly clunky to use, feeling like it's designed for non-touchscreen handsets. On our Nokia N8, it's not possible to click on the question itself – instead you have to press the scroll up or down button until it's highlighted, followed by Select. It works, but it's more time consuming than it should be.

That said, Lucky Octopus is a bit of fun, although this reviewer isn't too happy at being informed about impending unemployment: 'Will I get a raise at work?' Paul thinks... 'You will be fired'. Thanks Paul!
