Nokia C3-01 Touch And Type Review: 5-Megapixel Camera

We already know that the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type is a great mobile phone, but many of you have been wondering what it’s like as a camera. With 5 Megapixels, it has the potential to provide some excellent photographs – join us after the cut where we’ll be putting the Nokia C3 Touch and Type’s camera through its paces…

The Nokia C3 Touch and Type features a 5-Megapixel camera. This may sound small in relation to the latest smartphones – such as the 12-Megapixel Nokia N8 – but 5 million pixels is more than enough to reproduce stunningly detailed photographs.

This is especially apparent from the photographs we’ve taken below – sure, you won’t be able to print them out at poster size, but at anything up to A4 size they’re more than good enough when it comes to detail and quality. Noise is well contained in bright conditions, although details and highlights can look slightly grainy when cropped in at 100 per cent.

Colours are remarkably lifelike, with no sign of the over-saturation that blights so many modern smartphones. We’ve yet to try the Nokia C3-01 in darker conditions – or using the flash – but in daylight we’re happy with the results. Our handset did suffer with over exposure when shooting directly into bright sunshine – as you can see below – but we can’t think of any other phones that would cope with such testing conditions.

Control of the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type’s camera is via a slimline shutter on the side of the device. You can also take photographs by tapping the screen – as with devices like the Nokia N8 – but the small 2.4-inch screen on the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type makes this the impractical option.

In weather like this, however, the Nokia C3-01’s touchscreen really comes into its own. Using resistive technology, there’s no need to remove your gloves before you’ll be able to flick through menus. That said, menus do look a little cramped – so you’ll have to scroll down when looking through the options.

Speaking of which, there are plenty of settings to play with. Don’t fancy taking snaps in colour? You’ll also be able to try out greyscale and sepia. You can play with white balance, and switch easily from portrait to landscape orientation. Nokia has also implemented a self timer on the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type, offering 3, 5 or 10 second timers, so you can be the star of your own photographs.

Overall, the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type’s camera does an impressive job. Sure, it’s not as good as the Nokia N8, but at this price point it was never going to be. It’s more than capable when you need it, and it’s nearly up to the standard of the Nokia N97 Mini – a device that also gets Carl Zeiss optics and Autofocus.

I’ll probably never print anything bigger than 5 x 7, so an interesting handset would be a 5MP phone but with the emphasis on the lens quality and size of the sensor, and brilliant everything else
