We really like the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type. It's a great entry-level handset, and it has a lot to offer. We've been trying it out as a media player over the past week, and it's turning out to be a great device. Join us after the cut to find out why...

The Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type is a surprisingly capable device when it comes to watching films, despite the small form factor.

The 2.4-inch screen is sharp and colourful, and movies look great on it. It's also bright, making it easy to see even the smallest of details. Unlike lots of other Nokia handsets, there are no media keys on the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type, but then again they're not needed.

Instead, you'll find all the buttons you need – play, skip, pause – on the screen. You can also switch the film to fill the screen, which automatically turns it to landscape mode. The buttons disappear to let you watch your video, but tap the screen and they'll quickly appear again.

We were particularly impressed with the speed of the media player – there's no sign of dropped frames, making it easy to view all of your films without problems.

The fact the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type accepts microSD cards is another bonus, making it possible to swap films in seconds. All you have to do is remove the rear casing – the battery can remain in place, and the phone turned on.

This easy access also makes for a great music player, and with 16GB cards supported, there's hardly a limit on the amount of music and videos that you carry around with you.

The speaker on the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type is located on the bottom rear of the device. This means that it'll be face down when you're watching a film with the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type flat on a table, but the slightly curved edge means it's not entirely concealed.

As a result, it remains crisp and clear, and there's no sign of distortion when you turn up the volume – again something we love when listening to music. There's also a 3.5mm headphone jack, so you can plug in your own earphones when you don't want to disturb other people.

It's not just during playback that the media player on the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type impresses. It's also quick to start up, offers large onscreen buttons, and is intuitive to use. It also combines with the hardware volume keys on the right-hand side of the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type, so you can easily adjust the sound.

As an afforable media player, then, the Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type proves more than capable. It can never match high-end devices like the Nokia N8 – purely because of the more comfortable screen size – but if you're going on a long journey, and need something to entertain, then copy a movie or album onto a microSD card, load it up on your Nokia C3-01 Touch and Type, and enjoy.
