Ovi Store App: Real Golf 2011 HD Review

Real Golf 2011 HD is the latest in a long line of apps from Gameloft, and is one of the best we've seen to date on the Nokia N8. It takes full advantage of the dedicated GPU, offering stunning graphics. Join us after the cut to see if the gameplay is up to the mark...

Real Golf 2011 HD follows on from years of golf simulators on other platforms – with dedicated gaming consoles always offering a similar control method. Real Golf 2011 HD offers the same way of hitting a ball – it's all about timing, as with the real game, with you having to tap the screen at the top and bottom of your electronic golfer's swing.

It looks amazing, and is one of the best indicators yet of just what the Nokia N8 is capable of. Scenery is beautifully rendered, and it's a pleasure just to look at the courses. Tap on the right of the screen, and the 'camera' zooms the course and closer to where the ball should hopefully land, letting you carefully aim it.

Of course, it doesn't always end up there. As with real golf, wind plays a part, and get the timing wrong and it's all too easy to smack the ball out of bounds! You can even control spin on the ball, although it's tricky to control until you're sure of where the ball is going.

Putting is a lot more difficult, although it's still achievable enough to be completely addictive. It's possible to see a grid of the ground – with markers highlighting what direction and roughly what speed your ball will travel in – so it's up to you to interpret this and hit the ball accordingly. It's fun, and satisfying when you get it right, but it's definitely not easy.

You can choose from a number of golfing stars – from Sergio Garcia to Lee Westwood, with female players such as Annika Sorenstam also on the list.

You can also choose from a number of courses from around the world, and all of them are amazing. You'll get a panoramic flyover at the start of each hole, and it really does look every bit as good as older golfing simulators on dedicated gaming consoles. It's even a match for the current crop of games on handhelds like the Sony PSP.

Overall, we're really impressed with Real Golf 2011 HD. It offers similarly stunning graphics as its Gameloft sibling – Real Football 2010 HD – and combines it with surprisingly addictive gameplay.

Downsides? You'll have to wait just a little bit longer before it's available for download from the Ovi Store. It's worth checking your Ovi Suite software for updates, however, as some people have spotted Real Golf 2011 HD on there, available to download for the Nokia N8 now.
