Nokia has a whole host of updates and changes coming to the Symbian OS, including a shift to dual-core processors, a new user interface and a more flexible Homescreen. With so many changes coming to the Symbian OS over the next 12 months we can expect some exciting times ahead. Read on to find out about Nokia adding dual-core CPU to its smartphones in 2011.
Nokia has been speaking about the next stages for the Symbian OS at the International Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing. It seems the next 12 – 15 months will see a major number of updates for the operating system. Nokia is planning four or five major updates, bringing in a new look User Interface (UI), as well as a dynamic new Homescreen.
Nokia senior manager Gunther Kottzieper gave a presentation at the conference that highlights the intention for Nokia to not only change how the OS looks and feels but also the way users will receive updates, making it easier for users to always have the latest version.
The first big Symbian update is expected to happen in the first quarter of 2011 and will bring with it over 50 enhancements. However, we'll need to wait until later in the year before we get the new UI.
It's not only software that will be getting an overhaul, as Nokia is also looking at ramping up processing power, with 1GHz processors and more graphics memory added in the second half of 2011. For the true power user, we can also expect to see the first dual-core processor shipping in the second half of 2011.
