Nokia has a whole host of updates and changes coming to the Symbian OS, including a shift to dual-core processors, a new user interface and a more flexible Homescreen. With so many changes coming to the Symbian OS over the next 12 months we can expect some exciting times ahead. Read on to find out about Nokia adding dual-core CPU to its smartphones in 2011.

Nokia has been speaking about the next stages for the Symbian OS at the International Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing. It seems the next 12 – 15 months will see a major number of updates for the operating system. Nokia is planning four or five major updates, bringing in a new look User Interface (UI), as well as a dynamic new Homescreen.

Nokia senior manager Gunther Kottzieper gave a presentation at the conference that highlights the intention for Nokia to not only change how the OS looks and feels but also the way users will receive updates, making it easier for users to always have the latest version.

The first big Symbian update is expected to happen in the first quarter of 2011 and will bring with it over 50 enhancements. However, we'll need to wait until later in the year before we get the new UI.

It's not only software that will be getting an overhaul, as Nokia is also looking at ramping up processing power, with 1GHz processors and more graphics memory added in the second half of 2011. For the true power user, we can also expect to see the first dual-core processor shipping in the second half of 2011.

No doubt we're hear more about these developments as we move in to 2011 but it's enough to start whetting our appetite now. What do you think, is Nokia doing enough to make Symbian the best possible OS it can, or do you want to see other changes? Let us know what you think in the Comments below.

Symbian as always been the Best an Simpliest software, thats why i have always kept loyal to Nokia ,an now with further updates “THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER” at Nokia,so glad Samsung an Sony Ericsson left Symbian,an you watch them 2 coming running back after realising a big mistake they have made, but Nokia ought to let themselves only use Symbian,an with Meego soon Nokia really do mean business at Last

N8 has the best specs ever, though it’s software can be refined. It is comforting to see that nokia recognizes these issues and is willing to push for the latest technologies. Apple will then not have a chance of coming close, so that they can’t catch up with many things, again.

Nokia needs to strictly stamdardize their phone hardware specs. Fragmentation is already costing Androod dearly, as many of the best ios app developers refuse to face the chaos.

Please have only one N, C and E type devices at a time and hold them for a year atleast.

“more graphics memory ” – this may possibly bring higher display resolution aswell ? If they’re gonna keep the same aspect ratio 16:9 (for compatibility reasons) it may be 854×480 or maybe even 1280×720 ? :)

if nokia want the Synbian OS be NO 1, they hould share all the upgrades like maps, mails, software stores, ovi suite mucis and other etc. Look what GOOGLE did, they share. Nokia still can the Money if they share. Nokia dont be Selfish in sharing. t

I wish My X6 will work fluidly as iOS does, but with the benefits of Symbian and the charm of Nokia. If the interface is much more than a bunch of square-ish buttons, jerky Kinetic scrolling, small letters on many apps (Nokia, please yell at them} making them unusable, and unsmart homescreen.

Have you ever imagined new homescreen in landscape mode? more room, widgets, animated wallpapers and themes etc

If you are unable to make something new, just …copy Apple :)

After 10 weeks of using the Symbian 3, I love it. There is still room for improvements to get as good as IOS UI. Nokia is slowly but surely catching up. Waitiing the new updates. :-)

@andy burgin. The entire market looks like a straight fight between Symbian and Android, as these are the only OS’s that run on a multitude of devices, from relatively cheap phones to pretty expensive phones, and there’s little doubt Android is going to come out on top, the latest sales figures show Android devices totally eating up Symbian’s market share and in the last quarter of 2010 when the N8 was supposed to boost symbian sales, we have just seen Android phones outsell Symbian, it’s a blow Symbian will not recover from unfortunately as Android salse are just going to go up and up. There’s no chance of Samsung running back to Symbian, they’re the biggest electronics manufacturer on the planet and are having the time of their lives selling millions of their Galaxy branded Android devices, the same with Sony Ericsson, if anything they’re pushing Android as their main OS with the upcoming Xperia Play phone.
